    Ticket for no car registration?

    California

I offered to drive some nice people my friends an I met over to their house. On the way over I was pulled over and the police attempted to test me for a dui. I passed all the test. Problem was the car had no registration. I received a ticket for driving with no registration. Iexplained the situation but it didn't seem to matter.

I went to court and I'm being asked to show proof of registration. I have none, I don't own a car. My license is now suspended for the unpaid ticket. I originally paid the fine but I didn't show proof of registration. I was given civil assessment charge - twice. I don't want to keep paying $300 civil assessment fees and I cant give proof or registration. What do I do?

I'm not sure (what you wrote was not clear) but I'm guessing that you were stopped in a car that was not yours?

Go to court and talk to the judge. Explain why you can't show proof of compliance and then do what he says.

So, instead of asking the court/clerk/judge on ANY of your prior visits (or even now), you come online, tell an incomplete/vague story, and ask a bunch of people who don't know your situation???

I'm still trying to figure out how you went to court and are now suspended for an unpaid fine. The only way that could happen is that the judge found you guilty and you decided not to pay.

I am surprised that you were allowed to drive the car away from the traffic stop. Around here ("here" being New York) the car would have been towed to the police tow pound, and unless you registered it and produced proof of that registration, the only way you could get it out of the pound would be to come with your own tow truck -- because an unregistered vehicle may NOT be operated on the street.

The car was not mine. Why it was not taken during the stop, i don't know.

I went to court and plead guilt to driving with out registration (I didn't want to but its true I was. My fault for assuming the car was ok to drive). I was ordered to pay a fine and show proof of registration.

I paid the fine. I go to renew my license and discover I owe $600 in civil assessment fees. Im told by the court this fee can be added until I show proof of current registration.

My license is now suspended (I can't renew) until this fee is paid.

I cant show proof of registration because the car is not mine and I don't know the owner.

How do I show Proof? I told these facts to the judge and I'm still ordered to show Proof.

I have never heard of anyone being cited for a registration or no proof of insurance when the car does not belong to them. Unless you are the "primary driver" your story doesnt sound right, or make much sense.

However if your driving a car with no "tags/plates", it would seem obvious to me that at some point you would notice the obvious "empty space" where the license plate goes.

Regardless, no one here can "help you", you need to speak to someone IN PERSON at the courts or "tag office" where this occurred.

We do that. The law here says the driver has to provide proof of insurance and the registration. They're responsible for the vehicle when they're behind the wheel.

I written a number of people for driving cars with expired tags when the car belonged to someone else.

You don't know the owner, yet you assumed the vehicle was legal to drive? You don't see a question in that. Since you don't know the owner, you can't ask for registration? Who gave you permission to use the car in the first place.

Exactly, WTF are you doing driving a car that you don't know who it belongs to? I guess I've been retired too long, I forgot there are people out there that stupid....

-In God we trust. All others, put your hands on the car and don't move.
