Do you wear black police type gloves while on duty

or do you just put them on or maybe some rubber medical gloves when you are dealing with a situation that calls for them. My assumption is that its better to just wear the black police gloves 24/7 while on duty. What are the pros/cons of such gloves

I put them on when the situation calls for it. I do know some guys that wear them full time. And I know guys who don't wear gloves ever (oddly enough, both from CA).

Generally only when I need them, which is every traffic stop and any time I might go hands-on.

I used to wear them 24/7 until I realized that they're dirty (nasty crackhead dirty, not just doorknob germs), and I'm touching all sorts of things that I don't want to get nasty crackhead dirty such as my cellphone, laptop, everything in my cruiser, citation book, etc..

On to your next question: I wear leather. Some people like the synthetic baseball bating type, others the neoprene or kevlar tipped type. I find the leather provide the most grip when man-handling someone yet still provide decent "feel" when searching someone. They also fold up nice and fit in my back sap pocket very well, whereas some of the synthetic gloves are much more bulkier and wouldn't fit there.

On to your final question: I always put my right boot on first.

I wear them for searching a vehicle and when it gets cold! These Texas winters are cold down here!

I'm with Steve on this one. I wear them to search a vehicle, and that's pretty much it. I have gloves from the EMS box for blood/bodily fluid situation. If I wore gloves the whole time on duty I would have a gnarly tan. I wear Nike batting gloves.

I only wear them when the situation arises that I may need them. I wear leather gloves, and the medical gloves. Sometimes at the same time. I'm forbidden by policy from wearing them all the time.

I've always told people- If you see a bunch of cops putting on their leather gloves at the same time, something interesting is about to happen.

As a Patrolman, I wore them during Domestics, arrests, traffic stops that looked....interesting, and other similar occasions. Due to something that happened which cut/skinned my hands up fairly well (causing open wounds), it occurred to me that if I had to arrest a guy like that and he was cut/bleeding it would have been a bad day in the "potential contracted a blood-borne disease" arena.

I chose black leather gloves with less material on the index fingers (less feel lost on the trigger), additional rough grip-type material in the webbing-area between the thumb/index finger and also in the inner thumb area, additional puncture protection on the middle/ring fingers, and a thin Kevlar lining for slash/cut protection. The gloves provided good protection while maintaining a good "sense of feel/touch" during searches, and did not cause an appreciable loss in my ability to grip/fire my service weapon.

I still wear them when I go on arrests as an agent. Love those gloves.

    Generically speaking about gloves:

PROS: Protection, warmth, additional grip on things you might not otherwise be able to hold.

CONS: Hot in warm climates, possible decreased perception during searches, may change grip on service weapon (extra time spent learning to draw/shoot with them on), losing them, remembering to disinfect them, if the wrong ones are chosen you may loose some of your ability to hold on to things (PRO above); also -- not really worth mentioning -- but some management may think that they look "Gestapo" or "gang-like." Well from your desk it might, but.....never mind

That's cuz we likes our germs full force!

I rarely wore gloves either and, when I did, they were the basic latex type. I did go through a hell of a lot of Wet Ones hand wipe containers though!

In New York City, we wear them in the winter (when they are part of the uniform) to keep our hands warm.

On the other hand, around here anyone who habitually wore black leather gloves all the time with a summer uniform would be thought weird, and would be looking both for a command discipline for wearing an unauthorized uniform item at the wrong time of year, and for a letter from some busybody civilian complaining that the cop was trying to look "intimidating", or something.

Can you wear them at times when they're needed though it's not winter? If you're going to search a car, going to a bar fight, etc.?

    +1!

We used to have a guy here who made custom leather gloves for us. They saved my knuckles more than few times.....
