    Strobe lights

Here's just a random question about police cruisers and their strobe lights. In the last 2 years or so it seems as if a lot of the police departments in the seacoast area of NH have started to change the lights on top of their cars. Back where I live when I'm not at school they haven't began the change. These lights are just very eye catching, the blinking lights are very distinct and it looks as if they are just countless bulbs rather than one strobe with a colored cover over them. the cover is clear and is no longer blue. Another difference I have noticed is the color blue seems to be a little different than before. It makes it a little more difficult as to whether it is a police cruiser or not. I think these units are a lot more effective than the old lights just because of my personal experiences. I was wondering if you guys could tell me what they are called, any real test results police agencies have conducted on the effectiveness of these lights that you are aware of. If these units are more expensive than the conventional lights, if all agencies will eventually use these lights and things to this nature. I'm not trying to buy em or anything like that, just curious that's all.
Thanks for reading and any replies

It sounds like you are talking about led. There are several advantages to leds. They last much longer than anything else and they use less power. They are low profile so it doesnt look like you have the full red and blue lightbar on top of your car. It looks more like a ski rack from the front. The downside is they are more expensive than most other lightbars. As far as effectiveness, i dont know of any studies but my dept is slowly switching over to using some leds along with rotators. It becomes a matter of cost when you get to large agencies so whatever can be had for the cheapest is most likely what will be bought.

Yeah, LED's sound like what they're talking bout. We just stuck them on our new Traffic Car, and they have been working out pretty well. It is hard to tell oncoming if it is a lightbar at all.

From what I heard, since the covers are clear, someone had thought the car was the Explorer vehicle and peeled out in front of it "Knowing they couldnt be stopped"

We have a couple of cars testing them. So far they don't seem to have enough of an advantage to actually go to them.

We currently are using the Code 3 MX-7000 with D-lenses. They are augmented with LEDs.

We also have LEDs in the grill and strobes in the front corners.

the only problems that i have seen with the led lightbars is that they are kinda hard to see in the day. of course with technology going as fast as it is, they'll just make brighter ones, or put more on the bar. we use tomar bars here, its a neob strobe!! they are very bright!

-= looks at the pics of the leds posted earlier in a link=- Hmm... ours are like, half that size. They are really small, but really bright as well.

I am not impressed with the LED's however I do like the combination of strobes and LED's. My car is outifitted with the Whelen Fast Track, and I love this light bar. For those who aren't familiar with the Fast Track, it is a molded light bar that appears to be part of the car. They are slightly expensive, running about $4,000 for the set, but they are extremely bright and are fantastic for traffic enforcement. Its as close as you can come to a slick top without actually being a slick top.

Are you a HEAT unit? I saw one of your HEAT units at Wal Mart in Stockbridge and it was set up like that. Very sharp!

    They look odd to me...

For $4,000 a piece, I don't see why they just don't go slick-top. I think it's funny how HEAT seems to be the only ones in the state (then again I haven't been all over) who uses the whelen fast trax. I have seen one pic of the GSP that uses the whelen.
