Question about being active in government while applying to a police department.

So my question is simple, I'm thinking about applying for a police department in several months time. during that time I decided to file an initiative ballot measure in my state (Washington) The particular measure involves a revision to our firearm laws (nothing radical, just lowering an age requirement for permits and adding an education requirement for those permits. Would being active in government in this way be seen as a bad thing if I were to apply to a police agency?

    Bad thing legally ? No.

Bad thing if what you are proposing is something that officers in general would consider a bad idea ? Legally no , realistically ...probably.

why dont you run your idea past us ? We will give you are unfettered opinion. My isguess is you want the handgun ownership / carry law to go down to 18 as long as they get extra traoning: if so , i dont think that is a good idea.

The act of filing an initiative should be fine. I don't think we sign away our rights a private citizens.

I seriously doubt it will effect your chances of being hired.
Apparently, I'm supposed to be more angry about what Mitt Romney does with his money than what Barack & Michelle Obama do with mine

Y guess is you want the handgun ownership / carry law to go down to 18 as long as they get extra traoning: if so , i dont thonk that is a good idea.
Ok well simply speaking both states bordering mine allow unrestricted carrying of handguns (openly) at age 18 (in the case of Oregon) and Idaho has no limit on when you can start carrying, if your 9 year old is carrying a gun s/he is not breaking the law per se. anyway as it turns out a large number of states allow 18 year olds to carry guns in public (Delaware, Indianna, Idaho, Oregon, Maine, Montanna, New Hampshire, Nevada, Kansas, Kentucky, Ohio, Virginia, the Dakotas, Louisiana allows open carry of a pistol starting at 17. so now that we've established that my state is a relative oddity. keep in mind all these states i listed are for unrestricted (no license) open carry. so my proposal is to allow the issuance of a firearm license to people 18 to 20 who
    >meet all criteria to be legally able to own a weapon under state and federal law
    >have no convictions for minor in possession of alcohol
    >Have no convictions from any crime involving drugs
    >have no convictions from juvenile court
    >have not had driver's license suspended in the past 6 months
    >and completes an approved safety course (hunters ed and military training are considered approved) my measure also allows the chief of the state patrol to approve other courses as well. with these restrictions I don't think i'm trying to turn my hometown into the wild west (something which I don't want to happen) I think 90% of people who meet this criteria are responsible enough if you want the actual legal text of my measure please ask

    Thanks

Personally, I would probably hold off on something like that until I was hired AND off-probation...
