    Good cop,bad cop routine..

I was arrested a few weeks ago for stealing a few cartons of smokes..An basically one cop was being agressive, and the other sympathetic..So i said wait are you officers playing good cop,bad cop routine ?? They seemed puzzled, and excused themselves..When they came back there like whats the deal..Im like im 30 years,i have a heroin addiction but you got me on tape heres the smokes...So there like alright, and basically it was all good..Afterwards i gave them each a coca cola and theyre like alright what offense is this for you..I said my second..They did a check and came back and said hes not lying. But he said the amount makes it an m1..

So the officer goes come in tommorow to get printed. And i did,and i asked him since i cooperated and gave the smokes back is there anyway i can get it dropped to a summary offense ?? An he said, its possible..He told me to talk to attorney..

But do you think hes lying and just wants me to spend money on a lawyer cause hes mad i caught them doing the good cop bad cop routine..Or is it really possible that it could be lowered to a summary offense..And help id appreciate..I wasnt be a wise guy to them at all..It was just bizzare cause i stopped them and was like, wait is this the good cop ,bad cop routine..It was weird..Anyway,sorry about the poor grammar im really bad at it..

The best way to know for certain is if the "bad cop" was weaeing his "hat" and the " good cop" was not then they were screwing with you... Its a common practice here anyway we will have one with a "hat" that "cant lie etc." and one without that can " say whatever b.s. he wants"......

Sounds like you're in PA. It is not up to the officer to drop grading but the DA can. I never thought anyone could change that considering it's black and white in the crimes code that first retail theft offense is a summary offense, second is a misdemeanor, and third is a felony. In the county I work in now there are people with 5+ convictions getting dropped to a summary due to case overload...

And the good cop/bad cop stuff is only in the movies. In real life it's just different personalities. I'm a "catch more flies with honey" type of guy.

It couldn't POSSIBLY be that different people (and cops are people) have different personalities, could it?

Anything can happen in court. I stood in the courtroom here in TX and watched two Felony DWI's get dropped to Public Intoxication and a $2500 fine on each.

I was an adult probation officer at the time and went to the courtroom expecting to pick-up two more people placed on probation. Boy was I shocked!!!!!!!!

Thank you to all the officers for responding..To one of the posters good cop/ bad cop doesnt just happen in the movies.Im of course hoping it gets dropped to a summary i have a pro and con on my side. The con is this was at a wawa which is a convient store chain in the northeastern united states waiting to purchase a pack of smokes. When i saw a "box" of cartons of smokes which i later counted had 30 cartons of smokes in there which was 1,800 dollars in value.Thats 200 bucks shy of a 3d degree felony..The pro side is they got all of them back,i cooperated..

Samuel-I dont understand what you mean. Its law,as a police officer i figured youd know better then me if a 2nd retail m1 could be dropped to a summary or is it mandatory..

The police officers were really nice letting me go..This happened early on a friday so he couldve had me wait in jail to see a bail commisioner.I dont live in philly where bail commisioners are on call 7 days a week.

Safety steve-Thats amazing felony dwi's/..Here in pa on some cases dui-gen im incapable of driving safely .08 the lowest bac can be dropped to a reckless driving or in some cases you dont even lose your license.

    Sorry about the grammar again.

The police can put in a word for you but like I said, the only one who can change the grading is a DA/ADA, they still have to charge you as per the statute:

    § 3929. Retail theft.

    (b) Grading.--
    (1) Retail theft constitutes a:
    (i) Summary offense when the offense is a first
offense and the value of the merchandise is less than
    $150.
(ii) Misdemeanor of the second degree when the
offense is a second offense and the value of the
    merchandise is less than $150.
(iii) Misdemeanor of the first degree when the
offense is a first or second offense and the value of the
    merchandise is $150 or more.
(iv) Felony of the third degree when the offense is
a third or subsequent offense, regardless of the value of
    the merchandise.
    (v) Felony of the third degree when the amount
involved exceeds $2,000 or if the merchandise involved is
a firearm or a motor vehicle.

Instead of worrying about this, why don't you focus on teh more imporant issue:

CHECK INTO A REHAB AND GET OFF THE HEROIN!

Your priorities should be getting clean...then everything else.

Did you ask them for the card? If you catch them in the "good cop/bad cop" routine and call them on it, you get a "get out of jail free" card. Just like if I don't get a receipt at Taco Bell and call them on it, they are suppose to give me the meal for free.

Ive been to plenty an the only thing that works and im back on now is a drug called "vivitrol".Its a monthly injection that blocks the user from getting high hence you waste your money.I dont know why more addicts dont take it.I mean,i guess there scared they wont be able to escape there feelings if they wanna use but it takes away all temptation cause you know your going to waste your money..Suboxone works too,but all the user has to do is not take it for the day.
