    Recruiting Question

I recently graduated from the police academy, and have a question. I have this feeling that being a white male may hurt my chances of getting a career. I continually see job postings for law enforcement jobs that say, "Females and minorities strongly encouraged to apply". I feel that this is saying that they are not looking to hire white males. Am I just worrying about something that is not going to be a problem, or is it really true that being a white male may be a disadvantage because departments are wanting to hire more minorities and females?

You'll never know until you try, right? Stop worrying and start filling out applications. Don't worry about who else they're looking for, make them want to look at and hire YOU!

smokey, don't know if it was intentional or not, but there's no need to post a question more than once. I've deleted the other thread and will leave this one open for you to hopefully get some answers to your question.

All that means is they are actively seeking minority applicants to meet Equal Opportunity requirements, but the candidates deemed best qualified still get the job. Only way to guarantee you do not get hired is to not apply. Apply to more than one agency to better chances, too.

Depends on how much they are under the gun for having minorities working there. We've frequently skipped over more highly qualified white males in the past in both hiring and promotion.

That being said, you're chances are zero if you don't apply.

I don't see what the point is of worrying about it. I see white males get hired. You might have a disadvantage (or not with some departments) but just overcome it by being a better candidate.
