    Have employment questions

Hey I am an officer in the national guard and I am trying to get a job as a police officer. I was wondering about the disqualifies. When I was a freshman in college I gave my buddy my left over pills from having my wisdom teeth removed, dumb I know, and he gave me some money for them. Besides that I smoked weed a few times in Highschool and that's it. I've never been arrested or anything, this is the worst thing I have ever done. Will this cause me to lose my opportunity as a police officer.

    Dealing drugs...doesn't look good.

I get why people offer pills to other people, especially if the person is in legit pain (I've had people offer them to me, and they knew it wasn't for recreation) but I never understood the idea of taking money for it and thinking that's normal.

Oh I know. I definitely don't think its normal but I just wasn't really thinkin one cuz i was a freshman in college and was being stupid also cuz it was my friend. But I never went out and did it on a regular basis, before or after that one case. This has been the worst thing I've ever done. If I don't lie about it will I be ok?

You'd be an auto DQ (disqualified) at any agency near me. The military time might have helped especially with the weed as a kid, as that's almost a given any more. But all the agencies in my area (the Florida Panhandle) toe the line on selling of drugs. You state you weren't thinking 'cause you were a freshman in college, but weren't you at least 18 by that time? At 18 you're an ADULT, not a stupid kid any more, and that's what they're going to see, that as an adult you committed a felony in selling drugs that were prescribed to you. Doesn't matter you only did it once. You did it. Telling the truth is good, but in this case around here, it would lead you to look for employment in a different field.

Start looking at a plan B, and making that your Plan A.

I'm not so sure I agree. Although legally in most states 18 yoa is an adult, I've seen quite a few 18 yr olds act like they're 10. lol...

It's not that easy, just because you're honest about it doesn't waive any potential consequences. Own up to it and let the chips fall where they may. Lying is the easiest way to get a prompt, permanent disqualification that will follow you should you apply elsewhere. Being honest may get you disqualified from an agency anyway, but hiring policies on drug use/distribution do vary.

I know what you're saying... I've seen plenty of people 18 and OLDER that act like 10 year olds!! :bigggrin5:

But, the fact remains, they usually don't get the chance to become LEO's...

If a friend of mine was in pain and I had some pills that would alleviate that pain, I certainly wouldn't make him PAY for them...

The agencies I'm familiar with here in Texas, may not disqualify you right off. You would likely have to put yourself through the academy and start at a smaller agency, that pays much less. If you put in 3 or so years with no hiccups, you may be able to get hired on at a larger agency. Some of the really small agencies pay pretty low though, one of our small suburbs only pays about $25,000 a year.

When I started at the community college I worked at as a police officer, my pay was about $20,800 before overtime. And that was in 2007.
