    LEO being laid-off

    Good day All,
A mayor in one of our big city metro area comes out to say we dont have the money so we need to lay off cops with a sad face. has this been done in your city of where you work? Im just a Joe citzen but why cant they lay off workers in other city departments and why spend so much money on things that are not needed like thousands of dollars on art sclptures to make bus stops more enjoyable and thousands on roof top gardens thinking it will help with globale warming , more bike and walking paths I can go on and on but does your city waist money and then says we have to lay off cops

We haven't laid off in years, they found it was too expensive in the long run to spend money on training cops and have them go away and get jobs elsewhere. Fortunately, we have enough people retiring that they just don't replace them.

That being said, laying off cops and firemen gets people's attention though and can scare them into paying more taxes.

This. Although there are places that are in such bad economic shape that they have had to layoff public safety workers in addition to a lot of other budget cutbacks, it's still relatively rare. Politicians love to paint a bleaker picture than what is reality so when there's public uproar and the mayor or council decides to take other measures they're looked upon as saviors. Now it's possible that your city could really be one of those places where fiscal mismanagement has created a real emergency where there aren't other options, however it's most likely a scare tactic at this point.

    Police Officers Being Laid Off

My city doesn't, but I live near Minneapolis MN and they have. In fact, they laid off some cops just after they finished training a couple of years ago! They hired them back very recently. I was somewhat surprised that as many came back as they did. I thought more would have went to police jobs in other places, but I think the police job outlook in this area is so intense that there were very few opportunities to go elsewhere around here.

The last time they laid off here, about 25+ years ago, they gave the people other jobs in the city. I had a trainee who worked as a parking enforcement officer (meter maid). The time before, all but a couple found jobs elsewhere. Since in Oregon, there is no self sponsored, people relatively fresh out of the academy were scooped up. It saved the hiring departments a lot of money and cost us quite a bit. They learned their lesson.

As I said, now they try to anticipate and quit hiring as people retire for a while.

With all the costs of training, it would seem to be a very expensive 'cost cutting' method. Guess it might be easier in places where most people put themselves through academies. The department I work at is smart enough to just block hiring cycles... still can screw people over who thought they had a job lined up, but doesn't cost as much.
