When I was in the academy about 100 years ago, they put us through a drill where we stopped a car. This was done where no other students could see what was happening. As we approached it, the driver (a training instructor in civilian clothes) reached out the window and shot at us with blanks. Everyone of us was caught flat footed and our hands at our side. It was a lesson I never forgot.

And in real life 2 years ago an officer in my area was shot in the head and killed on a traffic stop. The shot occurred well after the officer made initial contact with the driver, and the driver worked as a pharmacist with no criminal record (only prior traffic tickets). Lain, you're either incredibly naive about a topic you've never had to experience in our shoes, or ignorant in the face of facts that conflict with your original preconceived notions. What determines which one you are is if the beliefs you have about "excessive force" remain the same or if you've allowed yourself to consider another perspective.

A motorcycle officer south of here was shot and killed by a 50 year old woman on a traffic stop last fall. Turned out she was nuts, but there was no way for that officer to know that. He thought he was just going to give her a ticket for being late on a red light.

Funny, with the title "excessive force" I thought there might be some force involved. It's only force here if I point the mean end at someone... unholstered alone doesn't count.

Im assuming the OP beleives the fact we carry a weapon alone constitutes his idea of force!
