History of drug use when becoming a cop

When I start the hiring process in a police dept, do they ask about my drug history? I only smoked marijuana a few times here and there, and I heard something about FBI saying you can't work for them if you smoked weed more than 10 times or so. How are they even gonna know? Not like the lie detector is 100% accurate. What about regular police depts though? Do they use lie detectors or just ask or something else? I suppose I will have to lie either way for the sake of greater good, but I'd like to know ahead of time. Please don't start with honesty and ethics and what not. I am one of the most ethical and honest people out there, but honesty will keep you jobless in this case. I am looking for rational feedback.
    Thank you.

You'll get nothing you would consider "rational" feedback on this subject here. This is a PRO Law Enforcement site and nobody here would ever tell you that you should lie to get into this line of work. In fact, it goes against the grain of everything that Law Enforcement Officers stand for, as integrity is a staple in our line of work, and if we did not have it (i.e. lying to get hired) then our word is worthless on the streets and in court.

That being said, I'm closing this thread.

I will give you some rational feedback.

    Is the opposite of this:

We don't need people with that attitude in Law Enforcement, and we don't want them, either.

If you're willing to "lie for the greater good" to get a job, then why not in a report?

    Why not on the stand?

If there's a guy you just KNOW is a criminal, but you can't prove it, then why not plant some evidence on him? One little thing for the greater good.

The fact that you seriously considered that is what makes me say you are wholly unfit for Law Enforcement. Minor drug use can be overlooked; a complete lack of ethical principles and honesty cannot.
