    I'm Stupid (Traffic Ticket Question)

*I live in Hawai'i county HI.
**To Skip to the relevant part, search for "**"

    Background:
Well, if you're reading this, you've been warned that I'm a notorious idiot so I feel no sympathy if you face palm mid-thread (Thank you for your help).
The other day I borrowed my roommate's car and was pulled over. The officer informed me that the safety sticker was out of date, and asked me to provide my licence and registration. The first request was not a problem, however, I could not locate the registration. Because I could not locate the registration, the officer was unable to verify the car was insured (which it was), so I was issued two tickets.
The first was for having no inspection sticker (HRS 286-25), and for not having registration in vehicle (HRS 286-47[3]).

    Relevant Part:
** The Second traffic ticket issued was for having no insurance (HRS 421:10C-104), which the officer was sympathetic enough to not arrest me for, and for "Driving motor vehicle with improper licence" (HRS 286-102[b]).

    Question:
I understand why I was issued the first 3 tickets, however, I do not understand the last ticket (Driving with improper licence). The officer did not imform me that I was being issued to the last citation, so I was unaware of the charge at the time I would have been able to ask questions. My court date is in February, and I would like to know what I am accused of doing before I appear in front of a Judge. I have tried looking up the law but couldn't figure out what I did wrong. I would like to get in contact with the officer, the county police department, or the prosecutor's office, to clarify the issue. How would I do this? Is this the correct course of action?

    Irrelevant but possibly funny:
I haven't been pulled over in over 5 years. When I saw flashing lights behind me, I legitimately thought the officer was trying to pass me as I moved to the shoulder... my heart sank when he stopped behind me.

    Thank you for your help.

Best to talk to someone local. Sounds like you were driving a vehicle that requires additional licensing (which you didn't have certification for) - either that or the officer made a mistake.

I'm confused, you list four charges but only state you had two tickets until later when you then say your had three tickets.

    No inspection
    No insurance
Improper/ You were not duly licensed. Look at your license-is it expired, suspended, from another state , learners permit or anything that is not a full Hawaiian license. How long have you lived where you are? Is you license from another state? What type of vehicle were you driving was it a commercial vehicle with advertising on it?

In a lot of states , cites issued for either not having proper documentation that you musy carry ( registration ) are dismissed if you show up in court woth the correct paperwork showing that the car was legal at the time of the stop.

Others are also lenient for expired items that you promptly renewed and cam.prove it

If you have specific as to why you were charged with an offense , you need to speak to an officer in your town if not the same officer who stopped you.

Sounds like your buddy screwed you a bit. However, I think you probably learned a valuable lesson in checking out a vehicle not owned by you before actually driving it so as to not be put in this position again.

As for the 4th unknown citation referencing a license. Try to contact the officer who wrote the citations to see if he can give you the reasoning for the citation. From reading the statute, it would definitely appear to be about your driver license in reference to the type of vehicle your operating. What type of vehicle were you driving? Was it a big truck? Either way, you have some money to shell out. Hopefully they drop the insurance and registration if you show proof you had them at the time. In Florida, you only pay a $10 cancellation fee for each citation proof is shown for.

    Good luck
