EAST WASHINGTON (KDKA) – Police have surrounded the home of a man who is believed to have shot two East Washington police officers Sunday night.
According to police, two East Washington police officers were shot during a traffic stop along Route 70 around 11 p.m. One of the officers has died, while the other remains in critical condition.
The officers initially pulled the suspect over for having expired plates on his vehicle. During the stop, gunfire erupted.
The suspect has been identified as Eli Franklin Myers of Webster, Westmoreland County.
According to police, Officer John David Dryer was taken to Washington Hospital where he later died. Officer Robert Caldwell sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound and was taken to Allegheny General Hospital.
“I did not see him other than I knew there was a body lying there and I saw another police officer giving chest compressions to that body,” Tom Plevin said.
Allegheny County SWAT and members of the Westmoreland County law enforcement community have surrounded Myers’ home in Webster. He fled to his house after the shooting.
The standoff ended when Myers was shot and killed by State Police SERT Team members when he engaged them with a weapon outside of the home.
One of the officers was a retired State Trooper who was working for the East Washington department.
Myers is believed to be a former gun shop owner as well as a former police officer.
