View Full Version : Explorer Program: Am I too late?

I wasn't entirely sure where this question should go, so admins feel free to move it if need be! :)

Anyway, I am nineteen years of age, turning twenty this March. For some time, I did consider enlisting in an Explorer program, but never did quite muster up the courage to try applying so late in life (I understand the cut-off age is 21 (varying by state). This being said, I would have little over one year to be an Explorer, & I am unsure as to whether I would be accepted on those grounds, or if it would be a blatant waste of the department/troop's time.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

It doesn't vary by state, the maximum age is 21 everywhere.

Duly noted McNulty, I must have misinterpreted/misread something along the way. Thanks for the correction!

If you can get into a post I would say you will definitely gain something from the experience. You'll have to check with the post staff though to see if they will take you, and if it would be worthwhile to do so with their post (many posts have probationary periods and such which would prevent you from getting the most from the experience in the time you have).

You would be allowed to join my former post. However my belief is that for anyone over 18, a better path may be to look at some non-sworn paid positions, for example community serivce officer/police services assistant, animal control, parking enforcement, civilian evidence tech, or dispatch.
