I realize that the NYPDs retirement system is completely different from the state retirement system that the rest of the officers in the state are a member of. That said, does anyone on here know if out-of-state law enforcement time counts toward retirement in EITHER system? If not (which I doubt it does), is there any system in place where one could "buy time" that was earned out-of-state?

I've done a lot of Googling and I'm always left with more questions than answers on this subject.

NYPD and NY State do not give any credit for out of state service and there is no buy back. Thsu you get nothing.

I cant take my time with my current PD and use it at another PD in state. If I left my dept at the 10 year mark and went to a dept on the other side of town , I would start from scratch. NOTHING would carry over.

Municipal PD's don't have a statewide pension. We each have our OWN pension. State Police do have a statewide pension but they dont pay into SS so they will never get SS benefits.

Wow. Here in SC, every police officer in the state, regardless of employer, is in the same retirement system. Same with firefighters, teachers, EMS, etc. Any state agency, municipality, county, etc. You could work at 10 different police departments and never have it affect your retirement.

Supposedly it's law that police officers are able to elect not to contribute to Social Security. There's a PD in a neighboring jurisdiction that allows their officers to do this. I wish I could, but my employer doesn't allow it, for reasons unknown to me.
