Rapid City Police Officer Killed In Shooting - KELOLAND.com | Sioux Falls News & Weather, South Dakota News & Weather, Minnesota and Iowa News (http://www.keloland.com/NewsDetail6162.cfm?Id=118993)

RAPID CITY - The Rapid City police officer killed in a shooting Tuesday afternoon was a six-year veteran of the force.

Police Chief Steve Allender says 28-year-old James McCandless died in a shooting that involved two other officers who had stopped a group of four people. It took place near Anamosa Street and Greenbriar Street around 4:30 p.m.

Allender says at some point while the officers were in contact with the group, a male suspect pulled out a concealed pistol and fired several rounds. At least one officer fired back. When it was all over, all three officers had been shot along with the suspect.

The three officers were taken to the hospital, where McCandless was pronounced dead. Another officer, 27-year-old Nick Armstrong, was critically wounded and has already been in surgery. The third officer, who hasn’t been named, was shot in the face and also had to have surgery. The chief says all of the officers involved were wearing bullet-proof vests.

Allender says the suspect is a Native American male in his 20s. He was shot but his specific injuries are not known at this time.

The investigation has been turned over to the DCI and South Dakota Attorney General’s office.

Tuesday evening, Governor Dennis Daugaard commented on the shooting on Twitter. He wrote, "Linda and I are praying for the three RC police officers and their families. Events like these reminds us that all law enforcement officers risk their lives to protect us."

Today it was confirmed that the suspect also died.
