A pic would be good.
"Mohawk" is a Native American tribe that the haircut is named for. Sort of like the marine corp high and tight only higher and tighter :).
"Cowboy hat" is, well, cowboy.
Basically this guy was playing cowboys and indians wth himself. And it would look weird.

Thanks Mike. Well I know how a cowboy looks like (have seen ALL the old far west movies with John Wayne) and also saw The Last Mohican (read the book also as a juvenile) but I hadn't noticed that that was the joke.
