My company develops high resolution video spotting systems for long range shooters (snipers) but recently we have been approached by a few of the departments we work with that have their own Aero Beuro's.

Their question is this; is there a technology that has been developed that has the ability to be mounted on a helicopter for the purpose of detecting the source of ground based green laser aimed at a helicopter and can that technology pinpoint the location (via GPS) of the ground based green laser.

This technology may exist for other purposes and has yet to be modified for areal use. If anyone has any information regarding this technology I know several LE helicopter pilots that would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you,

Paul

The military probably does, but I seriously doubt they would be willing to share it though.

The technology is out there. How do you think all these folks get arrested for shining a laser at commercial airpplanes. Teh technology though is very expensive and outside the relm of a public budgets. If a beam is shot at a chopper, there is no reasona any pilot worth their salt can't narrow down the area and call for radio cars to help.

@MikeG

Thanks for the info. I'm going to look into this and see if it's been tested State Side. Looks like it takes a digital snapshot of the origination point of the laser for later examination. Would be interesting to see if it can be integrated into on-board GPS & FLIR. I'll post what I find out in case anyone else is interested.
