If so, where would could they buy it? And could they buy used unmarked cars that will no longer be in service?

Btw, Happy Easter :smile5:

We auction them off, anyone can bid. I can't imagine wanting to buy one though. When we get rid of a car, it's pretty much shot.

The USMS auctions off a ton of seized property (houses, land, vehicles and seized items). These auctions take place all over the country. Neither us, nor our immediate family, may bid on any items at these auctions.

I see you are in LA. This used to be the best deal in town. Chp Car Sales - Hot Deals on CHP Wheels : Cars: Highway Patrol sells used pursuit vehicles at a considerable discount from market prices. For buyers who don't mind some mileage, the bargains abound. - Los Angeles Times (http://articles.latimes.com/1993-09-30/local/me-40536_1_car-lot) The cars went out at 100,000 freeway miles but were immaculately maintained down to the oil being changed every 3,000 miles. For the price paid, the cars were a bargain. Prices have dropped considerably since the article was written, with cars going for anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000 over the past couple of years.

Unfortunately, the Governor has put a halt to ordering replacement cars and existing vehicles are being driven until the wheels fall off. I'm not sure what is left for sale that is in reasonable shape. You might contact CHP in Torrance and see what is available.

We can buy seized vehicles being auctioned, but have to show up at the auction just like everyone else. We don't get first pick behind the scenes or anything.

Same here, we can bid, but get no special treatment. In fact, the auction is run by a private company who don't know us nor do they care. They work off a percentage so they want to get the highest price for every car and certainly not give anyone a "deal". All car dealers in the area buy and sell cars at that auction.

Back when gas was reasonably priced, the local cab companies used to buy all our marked cars. It was hard to find full siize cars and like L-1 said, they were all well maintained. Unlike CHP's though, ours were all city miles and the cars needed a good overhaul. But the cab companies didn't mind spending the bucks and they'd get another 100k or so out of them. Now I see a lot of cabs are mini vans and the sort that get much better gas mileage.

I wouldnt buy anything in our impound lot.
After arresting some of the drivers, I would be
afraid of catching something......

From what BIG was told years ago, neither can we or immediate family members bid on items either.
