after the nypd exam i am told you may or may not get a callback regarding the next step. is this the only way they contact you? i currently dont have a phone and just dont want to waste time worrying about not getting some call. anyone have the answer?

While I know nothing about the NYPD nor am I from New York, couldn't you have just provided a number of a friend or relative that would be able to relay information to you?

The NYPD requires EVERY police officer maintain a landline phone. Period. If you don't have one now, you will need one once you are hired. I suggest you get a phone if you want the job. And yes, they will call you when they are ready.
