FORGET sniffer dogs, crack teams of mice are being trained to detect bombers and drugs couriers at airports.

The sniffer rodents are then hidden in airport scanners, ready to raise the alarm. The detector has been built by Israeli researchers who say it is more accurate than using dogs, pat downs and x-ray machines. It looks like a metal detector or full-body scanner, but one side of it houses three concealed cartridges, each containing eight specially trained mice. The animals work four-hour shifts, milling around in an allocated cartridge while sniffing air pumped in from outside. When they pick up traces of explosives or drugs, they flee to a side chamber, triggering an alarm, New Scientist reports.

The concept may appeal to those who fear that the full-body scanners introduced at many airports are exposing them to harmful radiation and invading privacy. Security expert Bruce Schneier told New Scientist: "Animals" noses are always a good solution, and the mice don"t see you naked."

Gotta say kazz, I thought you were bluffing when I read the story! Good thing I made it to the end and clicked on the link. Now I'm just wondering what they do to keep the little ratties from pooping in their tube, which would most likely 1) mess up their sniffers, and 2) make going through the machine rather stinky... :biggrin5:

hahaha, yes, a bit on the nose.

I watched a program last night about rats in Africa that do saliva sniffing to defect TB.

Google came up with this article ~ Giant rats to sniff out tuberculosis - 16 December 2003 - New Scientist (http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn4488-giant-rats-to-sniff-out-tuberculosis.html)

I know they can also use rats for explosives, like land minds.

Sure do hope they aren't thinking of replacing all the dogs with mice. I hope someday to be a K-9 officer, not join the Rodent Squad!!

I can see it now:

"Can I get Dep So-and-So and his box of mice to meet me here to search this vehicle for drugs?"

If you don't fancy rodents, how about bees?!?!?!
