Would i be able to get promoted more quickly in the NYPD if i were to have a bachelors degree in Criminal Justice...know a foreign language...and be an officer in the USCG reserve...and experience in marine time law enforcement

Also does the NYPD take years as a USCG reservist in consideration to promotional benefits for example an officer who has 2 year military service can get the same pay as an officer with 6 years on the job. meaning if i have 2-3 years military service in the reserves does it still count.

Also what if i were to have the same qualifications but a degree in digital forensics would i be able to become a member of CSU or TARU quickly after completing probationary training.

Finally whats it like being a criminalist in the NYPD and would they accept the bachelors degree in digital forensics...and do they offer apprenticeships???

Thanks in advance for your answers

No

NYPD CSU are civilians
NYPD Evidence Control Technicians are unifomr cops but the job is not as great as it sounds
TARU- you are dreaming if you thing you have any chance. It is by invite only and digital forensics is not one of them. I will not discuss what TARU does or does not do, but you are barking up the wrong tree with that major if you even are thinking about TARU.

Civilivan job...not a cop...crunching statistics on crime. No apprenticeships.

Yes there is an incentive. It is called HONOR and PRIDE.

Not as a police officer. Maybe as a civilian.

The NYPD looks at college degrees as "check the box." NOBODY cares if you have one, unless you taking a promotional test. No matter what you come out it, nobody cares and likely you won't use it. We have freaking lawyers and three doctors who gave up the life and went into the academy. Unless you know somebody special, you end up in a patrol car like everyone else. You career from there depends on many factors including what you do as a cop, how you act, who likes you, who doesn't and opportunities happen to be available. If you think you will be doing any computer crap in the NYPD in your first 6-7 years, you are going to be in for a huge shock. After that, there is a slight chance, like 2-3%, however by that time, you certifications and training and knowledge will be deemed old, out of practice and some young gun will be used.

The Forensic Investigation has NOTHING to do with computers. It is actually the parent command for:
1) Bomb Squad
2) Crime Scene
3) Police Lab (including the sub-units of ballistics and latent prints)

Although Harbor Unit isn't an investigative tract what are my chances of making that unit based on my prior experience and federal training as a boarding officer/sea Marshall as a USCG...Also how would i be appointed to this unit

The entire Harbor Unit has less than 90 folks. And once you are in, nobody leaves until they get forced out the door. I have a friend who has ten years on the job, five in harbo, guess who his dad is? A Deputy Inspector. I went to lucnh with his team and gues who all of them are? Relatives of some very important folks. Guess how many of his five man team who had prior water experience? ONE.

The NYPD does not care about your outisde certifcations. Aviation does not want you to have military flying exeperience. Same with harbor. They want to train you THEIR way. Do you have a chance, sure. But you have teh same chance of winning the lotto!

You are dreaming! You first have to get hired....then pass the academy...then survive five years. Worry about that.
