OMG, this is a tough week. Too many surprises last week. I could only come up with half the picks....gotta come back, lol...
Ok, added a few more.... still trying to decide but leaning toward Eagles, and may still change to Vikings, Baltimore, and Houston. Oh heck, let me just go ahead and pick Eagles in case I don't get a chance to get back before game start....
Don't remember if it was supposed to be a new post or not but noted my changes in the post above.....shoot, now that I'm tied for first, I'm taking this sh** seriously, lol....will probably change New Orleans too.
Wish I didn't have to vote against the Skins but..... lol!

Oh, I'm sorry, Safety Steve....missed this post last night. Believe it or not, all I do is watch the teams play each week, even if for a little bit, and pay attention to who is hurt that week. No research, no bookies. I analyze systems for a living, all kinds of systems, and this is just another form of a system I guess. If I don't watch them play, I don't get any instincts about them, though. Or maybe it's just lucky guesses.

You could well be on to something. It's easy to use the head as a weapon when you think its protected. On the other hand, do you see rugby players that are 6-6 and 275-300 lbs?

I have to credit John Stossel for that. I heard him say it and I got to thinking. I think they should have elbow, knee, jock and tailbone protection... maybe some type of more protective mouthguard.
Of course, this would put some dozen sports equipment manufacturers and Snell Labs out of business...

I seen interviews where running backs and say they don't wear a lot of that stuff because it slows them down. As competitive as an NFL position is, I can imagine that's true.
From what I've seen over the years, it seems knees and hamstrings are what take out most players and there isn't much you can do to protect either of them. You can't run with a knee brace on. Hell, I had trouble walking with one of the damn things.

Maybe I am being insensitive, but to me those injuries, while tragic, are also a risk of the game.
Just like police work, no one wants to get shot or killed but you have to understand the potential is there, and we aren't even making millions of dollars per year. If you don't like it do something else.

I admit I'm part of the problem as someone who will keep watching even if they don't fix it, however, I believe there are ways to reduce the probability of concussions without taking anything away from the game whatsoever. Same with police. There's some equipment they can add for you that takes away from something else, and than there are other things that are a total value add. I do agree with your statement, Greg, about football as a generality though. I kinda like watching the safer sport of soccer, but it will never achieve the level of excitment of football. Football has higher risk, higher reward.

The talk seems to be to lower the target area of the hit. Apparently the current teachings are just to separate the player from the ball, which these hits are doing right now lol.
If they do start that I think you will see more offense because tackles will be broken more often...

I'm a defensive guy myself. Nothing tightens my pants more than an opportune sack, forced fumble, or pick. Big hits are good too.
But the Steelers have historically been more defensive teams even though Big Ben is very capable of putting alot points on the board.

I turned on the TV this afternoon and caught the very tail end of a show on ESPN. Some former football player (I didn't recognize) was saying that the whole thing about head injuries was being hyped. That seemed to upset everyone else, but I wouldn't be surprised.
The media AND the NFL will do what ever they can to get more viewers and making a big deal about something like that might attract them. That being said, I really don't know.

I like both parts of the game, especially watching a QB get sacked (Jay Cutler, sorry BP) but I love to watch a passing game the most. LOVE watching interceptions.

Very well could be. On the other hand, if you go back to this thread on Sunday, some of us were talking about the concussions in three different games before it even became a talking point on tv. I don't remember what show it was a few months ago ... 60 minutes maybe .... in which they were speaking about the more concussions a ball player/sports figure gets, the more they seem to come into dementia earlier in their ageing process. I am fairly certain Ali was mentioned a few times.
I've gotten a few in my life, and while I was never warned of dementia, I was warned about the possibility of detatched retina, for some reason.

People have been taken off the field injured as far back as I can remember. That was this guy's point, they have always been there, but now the media is reporting it more. Before they just hauled the man off and the only thing they talked about was whether and/or when he would be coming back.
I remember watching a thing on TV, I don't think it was what Creeker saw, I don't watch 60 Minutes. But anyway, they were talking about all the old NFL players who had numerous concussions over their playing years. And these were guys from the 50's, 60's and 70's.
Remember Jack Tatum? He caused the NFL to make rules on hitting people.

I agree about the media reporting it more. The media is reporting everything more now....24/7. I was a big Raiders fan in the 90s but I'm glad the NFL made rules because of Tatum. I appreciate the myriad skills in football other than one's collision ability. It doesn't take anything away from the game for me to force them to hit lower.
James Harrison says he may have to quit football. These new rules are pi**ing off a lot of people, but I completely support the NFL's new rules. No one's talking about taking away ALL contact. There's still plenty of contact that can reduce the probability of concussions and broken necks.
What really impresses me is how quickly the NFL has reacted. Can we put THEM in charge of our government?

True, but watching clips from games back in the 60's on, you can't make a case that the hits are harder or dirtier now than they were then or that more people are being injured today. If you believe the media, this is all new and that's simply not true. It's just that they decided to start reporting on it.
I remember what Jack Lambert said when they came up with the rule on late hits on quarterbacks, "What are they going to do next? Put little white dresses on them?" Football's a contact sport and hitting is part of the game. I have to agree with Greg, these guys are out there making small fortunes. If you don't want to risk getting hurt, play badminton. You can only do so much, for crying out loud. How much time do you have to stop and think, "Okay, I need to line up and hit this guy so I make sure I don't hurt him."

I'll be the first to admit that I quit football my sophomore year. I was a receiver because I had good hands and could generally catch the ball if it got anywhere near me. But to me honest, I was about 6-1, 155 lbs back then and getting hit by 6-0, 190 lb seniors was more than I was willing to handle. I finally got high-lowed the very moment I caught a pass and damn near didn't get up. I walked off the field, went to the locker room, changed and ended my football career. I stuck to baseball after that. In my Texas high school, every year some kid got fairly seriously injured and I made an intellectual decision that this wasn't for me.
However, if were being paid beau coup bucks to be out there or even getting my college paid for, that might be a different story. But I would expect to get hit and I would be cognizant that I will probably get injured to varying degrees. If I wasn't willing to do that, I'd do like I did in high school. But it's all part of the game.

Whether it be the press reporting football, the press reporting politicians'dalliances instead of keeping them under wraps (i.e. JFK) or the press reporting the average person's foibles more than they did in say the 50's, I'm not hearing people say things happen more now than they did back in the 'ole days ....it's just the 24/7 news cycle with cable and the internet has made things more public and more in our faces...which leads to more people being engaged...which leads to more responsiveness. I'm loving how that has helped politics, sports, law enforcement, etc. etc.
Regarding football and baseball, you are quite the renaissance man, RDS, and you know of what you speak :) But I'm hearing the argument from people angry about this go from "let's tweak the collisions by a few degrees" to "now they're all a bunch of sisies playing badmitton." I'm just talking about a slight correction. Let's use the compass as an analogy. If there's 360 degrees on a compass, I'm talking about moving it by about 3 or 4, not by 180 degrees. You'd know more about this than I would, given that you played football, but steer away from the head. Those guys on Sunday went for their heads.
