I am currently thinking of trying to get into the dps academy. When I was 16, I was arrested for "simple assault," but it was deferred adjudicated. Would this affect me in any way?

Unless you were transferred to an adult court, which doesn't sound likely with your description of the disposition, anything that happened to you prior to 17 years old cannot be used to disqualify you. FYI, deferred adjudication is considered a conviction for law enforcement licensing purposes.

Were you handled by the adult or juvenile system?
