Officer Ortiz, critically injured in a major traffic collision on June 9th, 2010, has succumbed to his injuries.

RIP Phil.........

(West Los Angeles) On June 9, 2010, California Highway Patrol Officer Philip Ortiz was conducting an enforcement stop on the right shoulder of northbound I-405 (San Diego Freeway) south of National Boulevard. During the enforcement stop Officer Ortiz was struck from behind by an Infiniti being driven on the right shoulder of the freeway. As a result of the collision, Officer Ortiz sustained major injuries. We regret to report that Officer Ortiz succumbed to his injuries on June 22, 2010. He is survived by his wife, parents, sister and a large extended family.

Officer Ortiz faithfully served the people of California as a CHP officer for 28 years. He was a motor officer for over 20 years in the West Los Angeles Area. Officer Ortiz’s tragic death, at the age of 48, falls on the heels of another CHP motor officer killed in the line of duty on June 11, 2010, in the San Bernardino CHP Area. Officer Ortiz’s death marks the 218th CHP officer killed in the line of duty since the Department’s inception in 1929.

The family and Department would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center for the care they provided to Officer Ortiz and the assistance to his family members and co-workers.

This tragic incident remains under investigation by the CHP.

R.I.P. Officer Ortiz.

THAT is why I hate responding to incidents on the freeway. I'll only do it if I have to.

God bless you, Officer Phillip Ortiz-Thank you for your 26 years of service-
A final salute of respect to you.

Prayers to the family, his agency, and all whom had the honor of knowing Phillip Ortiz.

To those of you whom are on the field, I so wish your brass starts making it a point to tell you all to write someone up off the freeway, and not be out there in speeding traffic. I love you all-be safe.
