Do tint meters read the light transmitting through the window, since I am a smoker i have a feeling that the windows would read less light is being past through than if the windows weren't filled with smoke residue

Most "tint laws" say that a certain amount of light has to pass through the window. If you have a tint on your window that darkens them 30% (the hypothetical maximum legally allowed in your state) and you smoke so heavily that the residue darkens them another 2%, then you are in violation of the statute. Not enough light is getting though.

At least that's the way I see it.

Just remove the illegal tint and be over with it.

The Minnesota State Patrol Officer stated the legal tint was 50% and that mine read 30%, is there any way dirty windows from smoke and dirt would read 20% less then if clean

You'll have a long, very disappointing life then.

Criminal = somebody who breaks the law

Law= rule on the books of a state citizens are expected to follow

YOU= broke the law = criminal

Read up on the theory of "broken windows theory of crime." It starts small and grows big. First you ignore the tint laws. Then speeding. Then you ignore the red light. Then you hit a car and kill a family of 4 on their way to church. Etc.... If you can't follow the small simple rules, then you will eventually stop following bigger rules. Small crimes grow to big crimes.

Instead of complaining about the law, just follow it. You quality of life will be much better.

If you just don't do things that are against the law, youi wouldn't be "nickle and dimed" with fines.

FYI there is a reason those tint laws are in place. Many state statutes are written in blood - meaning someone has died and a law enacted to correct that deficiency. Excessive tint obstructs the driver's view of the roadway, other vehicles, pedestrians, etc. I'm sure fatality accidents have occurred due to excessive tint which prompted light transmission testing and the resultant statutes.

If you don't like it, feel free to ride a bike.
