KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Kalamazoo Public Safety officers spent Tuesday night canvassing the area of Drakes Pond Apartments after an off duty officer was rushed by two men there.
Police say just before 11 p.m. Tuesday they got a call from an off duty officer who lives at Drakes Pond.
The officer told them he had just been charged at and shot at the two men.
Police say the officer was in full uniform at the time. He was not injured.
The sujects fled in a late model red or maroon Chevy Blazer.
Police spent the night interviewing witnesses.
"(The officer) was unpacking belongs from his vehicle when two subjects rushed him. He advises that one subject had a ski mask over his face and had what he believed was a hand gun in his hand. The officer fired one shot towards the subjects who then fled," said KDPS Sgt. Tracey Seifferly.
Within hours of the shooting police say a man showed up at a hospital in Battle Creek with a gun shot wound. An investigation revealed he was one of the subjects from Drakes Pond.
The 20 year old was treated and released from the hospital. He was then taken into custody on several felony charges and is currently at the Kalamazoo County Jail.
Police believe the incident at Drakes Pond may be connected to a robbery at Maple Hill Plaza on West Main Street earlier in the evening.
The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Department was called to "Rue 21" at about 9:00 p.m. Tuesday.
Employees say two black males in their 20's approached the checkout counter with a hand gun and demanded money.
They were given cash and fled the scene.
Police are asking anyone with information on either incident to call them or Silent Observer.
A news conference will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday. Newschannel 3 will be there.
