I was approved for an Entry Level Grade 5 with ICE as an 1811. Can someone tell me what my salary at FLETC would be (I know you don't get LEAP at FLETC) and what my salary with LEAP would be when I get to the field? I am confused with all this GL/GS and Step stuff and how much does locality pay increase this?

Thanks for any help.

Click here (http://www.opm.gov/oca/10tables/PDF/leotb.pdf) and then find your locality. these are the LE rates so you will need to remember that they do NOT include LEAP. Just tack on 25% and you will have your full salary.

If you are hired as a GS5, you will be a GS-05-1. Then you should go to a GS-07-1 a year later and then a 09-01 a year later... You will top out as a 13. I think, for the first 4 years, you go up a step each year. Then, I think it is a step every 2 years for 3-4 steps... then who knows. LOL

I know you don't get LEAP at FLETC

Not across the board, but some do. I was fortunate to receive LEAP pay in CITP and add-on at FLETC (I don't work for ICE), while ICE classmates in my CITP class did not (nor were some of their trainees with masters degrees given GL-09 starting pay). Just depends, unfortunately.

GL pay is a little extra than GS, but is essentially the same system (just specific to law enforcement). GL pay goes only to grade 11, so once you make 12, you are under GS for the remaining grades (i.e. 12, 13, 14 and 15).

Also, what YOUR salary will be in the field depends entirely on where you are assigned. Some areas (ex: big cities) have higher locality pay that supplements your salary. Can't give you a final figure on your salary without knowing where you'll be assigned in the field. At the very least, though, once you graduate FLETC and assuming you're not going to a large city, your salary would be something like this:

GL-5, step 1: $33829
LEAP: +25%
Locality: +14.16% (for "Rest of U.S.")
Grand total salary: $48,273.98

If you live in NYC, Washington, DC, Richmond, VA, or numerous other areas deemed by OPM to have a higher cost of living, your locality pay could be as high as almost 25%. For more info on GL pay tables and locality pay amounts/locations, see here: http://opm.gov/oca/10tables/indexLEO.asp
