How much should a person practice point blank gun disarms before they can be considered proficient enough at it to perform one in a real life situation?

There is no magic number.
If you are unarmed, and you are facing a gun and an opponent willing to pull the trigger, you are at a very high risk of getting shot. If you move you have to realize that if you fail, you die.
There is no such thing as too much practice for that.

No doubt. It all depends on your attacker's mindset and what they're willing to do.

It's all about muscle memory and, very often, thousands of repititions must be done before an action can be "programmed in". Think of a karate flass practicing each kick over and over.
Of course, based on the individual, your mileage may vary.

If someone was pointing a gun at me within arm's length I'd try to disarm them regardless of how many times I'd practiced.
I'm not going to rely on my adversary's respect for the sanctity of human life - I'm going to try something.
My chances of success will depend on how often and how well I've practiced. My chances of attempting the disarm in a real life situation will depend on my perception of the threat.

I've seen videos of prisoners practicing this in prison, so I recommend you practice as much as possible.

Hahaha
I never meant to insinuate that one should not try without having practiced. I only meant that, to gain some level of proficiency, it take a lot of reps.

You planning on visiting areas of town you maybe shouldn't?

My dorm is located about 10 blocks south of areas I shouldn't be visiting. There were recently a string of armed robberies not far from where I live and attend parties.

Personally, if I was ever robbed I would just hand over the wallet/watch or whatever the suspect asked for and be a good witness. As Switch mentioned, techniques are muscle memory, especially disarming techniques. There is no amount of money in your wallet worth getting shot over.
Unless the robbers in your area are shooting their victims after the crime, just comply and be a good witness.
I prefer this method of disarming an attacker...

Yeah...uh...you're gonna get yourself shot, maybe killed. Just give up yo' ****. Lots of things have to be in play to create the correct scenario for you to be able to disarm an attacker.

I figured, but...
Suppose one of these thug types decides to get drunk at a party and they just happen to have their gun on them, and I just happen to be at the same party.

How about "leave the party and call the cops"?
Trying to disarm a drunken thug is pretty stupid. When you get other people at the party shot, guess who will share criminal and civil responsibility?
I think the movies have gone to your head...Hollywood is vastly different from real life.

Allow me to clarify:
...and this drunk aims the gun at me.
The movie partially inspiring me here is actually a documentary, so its 100% real life. An Iraq veteran suffering from PTS recounted how he started carrying a gun wherever he went. He brought it to a party, got drunk, then got angry at someone. He immediately pulled the weapon out put it to the man's head and pulled the trigger. Thankfully the weapon didn't go off (I assume he neglected to disengage the safety).
The other part of the inspiration is first hand real life when I attended a party a little to far north of my dorm. I found myself getting mobbed by 6-10 guys. Rumor has it they were gang members. For all I know one did have a gun and I was just lucky he didn't think I was worth using it on.

Sorry, brother. Must be done for the sake of my sanity.
Keep your eyes on the Boston area news for party-goers shot and killed while someone tries to disarm drunken thugs. :rolleyes5:
