And I think I like it, but I have questions.

What's offsides? I saw no side lines.

Are they allowed to fight till someone hits the ground? If so, cool! Where do I sign up

Man this game is fast and I find it hard to follow the puck! Any tips?

One team has the puck and they are heading for their opponents goal. If a player on the team trying to score crosses the blue line before the puck, that's offsides.

Are they allowed to fight till someone hits the ground?

The few games I've seen, that's usually how it goes. Or they'll stop it when it starts to slow down.

Hope this helps.

True man's game. Got a problem with your opponent? Beat him into submission. :biggrin5:

Norm,
No worries, the more you watch the more you will understand.

A few months ago, I went with a friend (I knew he had little hockey knowledge) and a couple of his buddies. I had no idea that most of them did not know ANYTHING about hockey (except for what one of them learned surfing Wikipedia the few hours before we went). I spent a bit of time explaining and answering questions to a few drunk guys.

What game did you watch? PIT/NYR?

Get HDTV and you'll be able to better see the puck.

I love hockey. Got into watching it a couple years ago. I like that it's a fast-paced game and they can fight. I, too, have had to learn the rules as I go along.

I'd like to see the games in person, but any pro sports are just insanely expensive to see. I think I'll be sticking to watching it on the boob tube for a while.

We have had a Farm Team here since our Coliseum opened in the mid 90's. They are associated with the Washington Capitols or the Hershey Bears, I'm not sure which.

When they first came to Charleston, I occasioned a few games over 3 or 4 years, but then it bacame a hassle to go and didn't seem worth the $ to me to get beer dumped on me by drunks and dodging pucks that I couldn't see coming.

I watched a guy in the stands get hit in the face with one of those things, and it wasn't pretty... cut him pretty good.

The best part is the disclaimer by the Coliseum... "not responsible for injuries to bystanders".

Most arenas, and all of NHL arenas, have netting installed behind the goals. The nets stretch towards the corners. Those areas are most prone to having pucks fly up in the stands. It's a risk and that's why you have to keep your eyes on the action. There have been people killed in the stands by flying pucks.

Its been years since I've been to one of ours, but trust me when I say there was no netting anywhere, just the "glass".

I have noticed that there are far fewer pucks heading into the stands with the more Pro teams... maybe the netting is why.

Hard to argue that. I get excited watching it since it's fast-paced. I feel like a dog in prey drive, following the puck and action around the ice!

Doon't get that from baseball or football. While I like those sports, it just doesn't hold the same level of intensity for me that hockey does.

Coyotes made me proud this year - even without winning the cup.

I think it's like NASCAR. People say they watch it for the racing when it fact, they're just waiting for cars to crash.

My dept had a hockey team when I was fairly new. I didn't play it, but they played a lot of other amateur teams in the area. A lot of the other teams wanted an opportunity to do some "get back", but our team was better known for it's fighting ability than it's skating.....

Sidney Crosby is your dad.

I despise Crobsy, HOWEVER, if he played for the Orange & Black I'd probably love him. I have immense respect for him for his talent, but my God, he is such a whiney, crybaby. He would definitely earn an Academy Award for the most dramatic player on a team.

And yeah, yeah, Greg, I know they Flyers are a hurting unit right now and I don't think they're going to make it past this second round. What can I say - I'm a Philadelphia fan and used to disappointment (but I NEVER give up on them - I still bleed orange & black!).

Although I LOVE the Flyers, one of the most impressive players IMO is Ovechkin. I've always thought he was the complete package. He's one hell of a player.

I'd be a lot happier right now if Boucher wasn't between the pipes (I prefer Leighton and it sucks he's hurt), it's a bummer that Gagne & Carter are out, because they are a big part of the team, although my husband-to-be, Danny Briere is da man!

Hoping Lappy comes back soon, too. I didn't check the injury report and being here in Tennessee there's not much talk about the Flyers, but that man is a work horse and blocks shots more than any player I've ever seen. He rocks big time!

All in all - Go Flyers!

Greggles,

Bite me! :P

It just sucks for me so bad right now. They played with such heart against the Devils and really played well. Having Gagne, Carter, Leighton, Emery and Laperriere out doesn't help much either. It's a real bad time for injuries.

Asham, Giroux and Leino have stepped up their game, but I expect more from Richards, Briere (as much as I love him), Pronger, Betts and Hartnell, who has really been awful the entire seriers. Having Boucher between the pipes isn't much of a comfort either. I don't care much for him and goal tending has hurt the Flyers for years.

As a Philadelphia fan, I'm used to disappointment, so I forsee a sweep in Boston on Friday. Depressing.

However, we still have the Phils to give the City of Philadelphia hope (even though I'm no longer a resident). Loving Halladay big time! :)

BTW, since I hate Pittsburgh so much, I'm hoping Montreal can pull it off and put the Pens out of their misery (and mine!)

Hockey is my second favorite sport. They are allowed to fight until one goes down or is getting pummeled, no two on one or it's to the box. Playoff hockey is a whole differant game then inseason, it's much more competative and violent. Better learn to see the puck, they go in the crowd or through the glass sometimes. Rohneck got his face split open a few years ago, they hit em well over 100 mph sometimes.

That's the past, Greg. The Flyers are a definitely on a mission, and if given the opportunity, I think they could take the Pens.

For my Flyboyz, the first game against Montreal, they crushed them 6-0! It's a GREAT start for the Flyers. I can't say what will happen the rest of the series, but I sure hope they win. They're actually playing with heart and I love watching them, whether it's regular season or play offs.

Question for you: Now that Habs took the Pens out of the picture, who are you hoping wins the series? The Habs because you hate the Flyers that much, or the Flyers because Montreal crushed your dreams of another Cup? ;)

Curious minds need to know.

Choice C, the Western Conference. I hold no ill-will agaisnt Montreal. I still think we are the better team we just didn't play like it.

I can't stand the Flyers. They are like a bunch of thugs and majority of their fans follow suit. The only one who isn't that dirty that I've seen is Mike Richards, but he is still a Flyer so guilt by association.

As for the 6-0 win we beat Montreal 6-3 the first game. They hung around the whole time so all that win guarantees is the you will have one win in that series.

Gee, Greg, I guess reading comprehension was never your forte. http://i45.tinypic.com/29mk6ir.gif

I said the Flyers beat the Habs the first game but I didn't know what would happen after that, but I did say I sure hoped they (the Flyers) win.

And the Flyers will always carry the stigma of being, "The Broad Street Bullies". It's followed them year after year.

EVERY team has an enforcer to protect their star play. That's just the way it goes. Some may have more than one (in this case, the Flyers). But there's one player (former Av) whom the fans LOVE, and that's Ian Laperrière. Not because he's chippy, or doesn't mind scrapping, or blocking pucks with his face and losing a bunch of teeth in the process and coming back in that same game to continue playing, but we love him because he plays with heart. It feels like he's been a Flyer a lot longer than he has been and I hope he retires a Flyer. Lappy is all class and all heart.

Then I guess all these players are just "guilty by association", because they're not known for fighting but for their talent. Just to name a few: Briere, Gagne, Van Riemsdyk, Leino, Carter, Giroux, Betts, Timonen, Parent, Carle...

Should I go on?

Wondering who you can't stand more - me or the Flyers - or maybe we both rank right up there at the top of your list.

BTW, praying the Flyers make it to the Stanley Cup Finals and it ends up being Philadelphia/Chicago. That would be some great hockey.

First off thanks for the insult but I skimmed your post which is why I missed that.

The Flyers sore losers? I think you've got that backwards. With the talent that Crosby's got, it's a shame he takes more dives and complains more than any player in the league. He could win the Academy Award for the Best Dramatic Player in the NHL! Even Lindros wasn't that bad - his problem was he just couldn't cut the umbilical cord from his parents. And FWIW, I think Lindros was a better player than Crosby. That's just my opinion. Besides, I'm more impressed with Malkin than I am Crosby.

On today's Flyers roster, I don't see anyone with the same talent that Crosby has (but there are one or two who get better with every game), however, I don't see Crosby as being the best player in the NHL. For the past few years I've always thought Ovechkin has been the best. He's the complete package.

I just get tired of hearing people talk **** on Crosby like he is a no-talent nobody. There isn't a guy in the NHL who doesn't take dives to draw penalties. And I would venture to guess even when it's an acting job the reason they call the penalty is because they respect his talent and sometimes the only way to stop him is by penalizing him.

And for you to seem to indicate that is the only reason he is successful is due to that fact is absurd. I would expect nothing less though from a Flyers fan who always seem to like to talk alot of crap yet their team consistently chokes when it matters. They will in the finals too. The football team is the same way.

Grit is making dirty knee to knee hits? Wow I really must not understand hockey.

I have a lot faith in the Flyers and Leighton. And yeah, I know they barely made the play-offs but they made them just the same. And btw, don't forget they did what only 3 other teams before them have done with the Boston series - come from being down in the series 3-0 and end up walking away the victor. No credit for that?

I wouldn't write them off so easily.

Kate
06-21-10, 10:58 PM
Yeah, how about those Flyers! They didn't get swept like you expected, and they didn't roll over. They played with heart and I am so proud of them. For a team that was seeded so low and barely made the playoffs, they came back with a vengenance and showed that they don't quit.

The Hawks were the better team and I couldn't be happier for them. They played well and they deserved to win (although I really did want the Flyers to bring Lord Stanley back to Philly).

Two things I can say I am embarrassed about as a Flyers fan: the reception the Hawks got from the Flyers fans when they were presented with the Stanley Cup. The fans really should have showed class and gave the Blackhawks the props they deserved. I sat in my apt and cheered and clapped for them. They played a great series and I don't hold any grudges towards them at all. As a matter of fact, of all the NHL teams, if not the Flyers bringing the big prize home, I wouldn't want to see any other team other than the Blackhawks taking it all.

And I'm extremely disappointed in Chris Pronger. It's embarrassing to say he acted like a child. For a man with as much talent as he's got, and the ice time he's given (which shows how much of an excellent D-man he is), to carry on the way he did made me cringe.

You may think all Flyers fans are thugs, etc. I already told you - I'm the exception to the rule.

Looking forward to the battle of the Keystone when the new season starts. It's always fun to watch.

Out of curiosity, Greg, what changes do you see happening with the Pens this season? Who do you think will go? Who do you think should go? Do you see the need for more talent (and I'm not talking Crosby, Malkin or Stahl)?

BTW, I really did enjoy the banter back and forth with you. I don't know about you, but I really did have a lot of fun. I hope you at least enjoyed it a little.

I think Sergei Gonchar is gone. He will want more money than we can pay him and he is old. He played old in the playoffs. It's a shame too because he is surgical with the puck on the power play. He has a talent that you just cant teach.

Guerin is another old guy but I'm not sure we can afford to keep him either.

I figured Matt Cooke would go too but I saw today he signed a three year deal.

Alexei Ponikarovsky didn't really help us much so I'd imagine he is going.

There's alot of talk around here that we need a "scoring winger." I think our wingers our good but I'm not the "expert" these guys are and they did struggle to put the puck in the net this past year at opportune times. They lacked consistency. With the cap though its gonna be hard to get a scoring winger at a price we can afford.

Just heard today the first regular season game at the new Consol Energy Center is against the Flyers. Couldn't have been planned much better than that.

Crosby, Crosby?! Shoot, I didn't know he plays hockey too! I thought he'd be too old by now...

I have immense respect for the both of them. They really can play a great game of hockey.

You know what gets me, Greg? The NHL has this salary cap, and then you look at football players, baseball players and basketball players and they're making a freaking fortune. Why no cap for those sports? Are those players REALLY worth that much money? I think not. I think they're narcissitic and I believe implementing a cap is exactly the wake call these other pro sports need. Besides, we're all footing the bill by going to watch them play, and all the while, the majority of us are struggling. just my $.02.

Yeah the cap has its ups and downs. They all make way too much. I wouldnt have a problem with all players having a six figure income but in the millions is just crazy.

You wouldnt need a cap if you dropped EVERYONE'S salary.

BTW Kate I dont think you're a thug but I do hear you like to flash gang signs.

If you are a Redskins fan you are basically setting yourself up for disappointment.

It's all about the strategy. All about the strategy, Greg. The faster the sport, the more I like it - BBall, hockey, football - but I LOVE baseball. Like four dimensional chess. And DAMN those are some cute bodies.

By strategy you mean the team with the highest payroll has the most success?

No, I was talking about the athletic skills, but I do agree with your sentiment about the impact of money on all sports, including Olympic sports. There should be a way to enforce a more level playing field, I'm just not sure what the answer is. I'm a big believer in the power of competition for correcting things in the businessworld, but sports are a different animal.
