OMAHA, Neb. — Officials disciplined students who papered their nearly all-white high school with posters advocating a white student from South Africa for the school's "Distinguished African American Student Award."

Peggy Rupprecht, spokeswoman for the Westside Community Schools (search) district, said administrators at Westside High School (search) discovered more than a hundred of the posters throughout the school first thing Monday — Martin Luther King Jr. Day (search).

"The content of the posters, they believed, was inappropriate and insensitive to some members of our school community," Rupprecht said.

Citing privacy policies, Rupprecht said she could not specify what the penalties were or how many students were disciplined. But the mother of the boy pictured on the posters said he was suspended for two days.

The award has been given the last eight years to an outstanding black student as part of the school's Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration, she said.

The poster pictured junior Trevor Richards, 16, smiling and making a thumbs-up sign. A message at the top encouraged votes for him for next year's award.

Karen Richards said her son and his friends were not trying to hurt anyone.

"My son is not a racist," she told the Omaha World-Herald. "He has black friends, friends from Bangladesh and Egypt. Color has never been an issue in our home."

"It was a very innocent thing," she said.

Two of her son's friends were disciplined along with him, she said. A fourth student was punished for circulating a petition Tuesday criticizing the practice of recognizing only black student achievement with the award, she said.

Tylena Martin, a junior, said the poster had been on the door to her homeroom class where she is the only black student. She said she felt hurt by the posters and the backlash that ensued.

'liberal'; in this case, would be allowing the white guy to win the award :) man I love it when words are thrown around.

I on a personal note, have always wondered why things like this still happen. This to me is an example of the bad things that came from the affirmative action craze.

What if the kid from South Africa had been a person from what used to be called a "Cape Coloured" background? I think Dr King wouldn't have approved of such a racially divisive award. It might be presumptuous of me but I think he would have preferred the award be given for other reasons. I have read his speeches, he wasn't about division, he was about unification. As he said in his most famous speech (and I paraphrase) it's about content of character and not colour of skin.

Is it over yet? The affirmative action thing I mean. Personally I have no problem with programmes that seek to overcome the effects of years of social neglect, however I do have a major problem with the woolly-minded thinking which comes up with this kind of programme. What is the educational value behind it?

I don't want to see anyone inhibited because of factors unrelated to their personal abilities (eg by condition of birth) and if any society is to be considered just then it has to overcome those conditions simply so that everyone gets a fair go.

Nor do I believe in pulling other people down simply because they were lucky enough to choose rich or intelligent parents - or if they really got lucky rich and intelligent parents.

But this programme is almost to silly for words.

And the irony of the "liberal" tag didn't escape me ngcsubutterbar :D

liberal = wanting change
conservative = wanting things to stay the same.

Or

liberal=progressive=wanting (constructive) change
conservative=protecting entrenched privilege=wanting things to say the same

I still think affirmative action is a flawed policy. And if it isn't a flawed policy then its practice (spelling?) is flawed.

It's only the Liberal today that says that the only way that a black person can succeed in America is if the government holds everybody else back. To me, that's a racially offensive suggestion and every black person in America should feel insulted by it. Dc and I are in agreement on this...

I don't know if I am conservative or liberal. I am an American of Mexican descent and feel that to single people out because of thier race is discrimnation. this includes Affirmative Action. No one can tell me that the Government has to put programs in place because my learning ability is less than someone else's from another ethic origin. I find it very strange that immigrants can come to this country, unable to speak a word of English (like my father) and yet within a few years of being here working a couple of low paying jobs become sucessful. Yet lifelong citizens claim that they cannot get ahead due to lack of opportunity and require special treatment.

Please excuse the spelling errors in my last post. This stuff really works me up and the hands were a little shaky!

Finder, well said. The issue IMO is that of advantage. It's hard work to become financially successful in this country and there are no shortcuts for people in general(powerball excluded). If you are someone that believes that someone did something to somebody 200 yrs ago that had your skin color...you can try to petition the gov't to give you some cash or some preference or some advantage...than that makes success a little more attainable. It just makes those that are doing it without help look twice at those that are. IMO

I think it is all bullsh**. Nobody should have an advantage over someone else because of their color or sex. That is still the biggest crock that we deal with in America.

On another note, I am shocked that Kenny and DC agree. It is getting cold down here. :rolleyes:
