Subject: Deputy Kent Mundell-Pierce Co SO

A short time ago the Pierce County Sheriff's Office announced that Deputy Kent Mundell succumbed to the injuries he received last Monday night at a domestic violence call in the Eatonville area. While we are heartbroken by this news, we take some solace in the fact that his family was able to arrive from out of state for a final visit before he passed.

The news is better with regards to Sgt. Nick Hausner. He has recovered enough to be released from the hospital and is back home with his family.

We have communicated official condolences to the Sheriff's office from headquarters, and we know that many of you have conveyed the same message personally to those you know. Thank you for reaching out and supporting them in their time of need.

In less than two months our state has lost six police officers, and two more have been wounded. It's difficult to understand why these tragedies would occur in such close succession. We can only hope that this is some horrible anomaly, and that we have seen the last of it.

However, we would be remiss if we didn't remind all of you of the importance of being safe. Regardless of your division or bureau, please take appropriate steps to be safe in whatever environment you work in.

Along with your physical safety, please also be mindful of your emotional health. We are all bothered by these recent tragedies, and should be. These are troublesome events. But if you are bothered to the point that it is disruptive to any aspect of your life, please seek help and guidance in getting through this difficult time. For some that is family or faith. For others, the agency has resources such as Peer Support or the department psychologist. There is no stigma in asking for help- please do what works for you.

Finally, thank you for all that you do every day. One of the things we have learned through these tragedies is just how much the public appreciates the role of public safety employees in their communities. They highly value the sacrifices you make on their behalf.

Take care of yourselves, your families and stay safe.
