My tags are expired and I park on the street, I'm in the process of trying to find a job (been laid off for a year) and cannot afford to pay for the reg. I got ticketed and have to pay a fine, I'm not going to argue that cause I know I deserved it, my question about the ticket is will this go on my record?

The second question is about window tint. I've been thinking about getting my windows tinted and wanted to know what the regulations were for tinting windows. I did come across a site but I can't post it cause I don't have 15 post yet.

3rd and final question, how do police officers go about finding out if the window tint is to dark. I'm trying to stay within the legal limits and not wanting to get a fine or get a fix it ticket and have to take off the tint after I've gotten it on. Very much appreciate any info you can give me. By the way I live in SFBA if that matters at all

Registration is a non-moving violation. JFYI, over 6 months expired is towable.

Any visible tint, front side windows, is basically illegal. Look up CA vehicle code 26708(a)(1).

If you tint, be prepared to pay a fine and/or remove the tint to correct the violation. You may or may not get pulled over, you may or may not receive a cite, but it could happen...

I applaud the fact that you want to take responsibility for your registration violation.

But I have to ask...

If you're unemployed and can't afford to get your registration taken care of, why are you spending money to get your windows tinted?

Why not take that money and put it toward the registration of the car so you are legal to drive?

The window tint thing is just for future reference. I'm selling the car for 9600 and taking off the price of the registration for the new owner (whoever that may be). I plan on getting a honda prelude (I'm waiting for you guy's to roll your eye's at that) and I wanted to get it tinted. I'm selling the car I have now for a car I can afford the insurance on. I read some where online that light has to be 70% visible in the front does that mean the tint in the front can be up to 30% or how does that work. Like I said I'm trying to keep things legal. btw I've never harassed a cop, I know that not all of you are perfect and there are some that can be pushy, but I know you are doing your job.

70% is factory, which means you can't add any aftermarket tint to the front. For example 5% in "tint talk" is typically what limo's use, meaning it allows 5% of light through the glass. And in reference to the Honda comment, why would we roll our eyes? :confused:

The reason I feel you would roll your eyes is because I'm 25 (young male) and will be driving a 97-01 prelude. I don't want to offend anyone, but I know you've heard people say certain cars are "cop catchers" or something like that.


I like this forum/site because I can ask questions to you guy's/girl's that are off duty, I don't want to bother an officer that's already busy doing other things. I want to be better informed so to make sure I'm not going to get in trouble and I also don't want to be like other people on this site that try to build a defense to get them out of trouble when they were or are doing something wrong. The more info I know the better off I am.

Cops like cars too brother (we're human too, believe it or not)...and as far as I'm concerned, they aren't "cop catchers" as long as you don't drive like an idiot I'm good with it.

The actual law makes no sense. It says
"A person shall not drive any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows.

(2) ( )1 A person shall not drive any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied in or upon the vehicle ( )2 that obstructs or reduces the driver’s clear view through the windshield or side windows."

With that being said, the law technically states that you cannot drive while wearing non-prescription sun glasses. They "obstruct" your view.
The law is inadequate and needs to be addressed. How does a window tint obstruct a drivers view in california? In cali, the sun obstructs your view all morning and all evening.

Sam Sam, can one just paint their window's black, and therefore get out of any window tint citation? :db::dance::lol:
