The sharp/pointy end goes into the other guy. The sharper/pointier it is, the better it works. That's about it in a nutshell.
There are quite a few knife or self-defense forums out there that might be a better match for you.

"Patrol knives" are a waste of money. I literally have two shoboxes full of knives and brass knuckles I've removed from the streets. I use one of those knives at work. As long as it locks open well and has a serrated edge I'm happy.
