View Full Version : A handgun for my wife

amhrinda
07-30-09, 05:29 PM
My wife has recently told me that she would like to apply for a Pa. Firearms permit, as it is her Right as an American.

Being the supportive and understanding husband, I immediately asked her: "So what kind of handgun do you want then?"

I suggested this (http://www.kimberamerica.com/pistols/compactprocarry/pro_tle_rl_II/) as I think she would appreciate the smaller size and the rail for a light. (And I am partial to Kimbers)
Any other suggestions? Thank you in advance.

If you've got the bread to burn, can't go wrong with that weapon.

If you've got the bread to burn, can't go wrong with that weapon.

That is the functional variable there. That is the dream weapon. It would require some saving, but every Kimber I have ever used was a solid weapon, so I would like to break her into it with something nice.

I'm thinking a Derringer that she can tuck into a garter on her leg. :D

Seriously, that's a nice handgun but unless she is an avid shooter the .45 may be a little much.

There is a solid idea.

Seriously, that's a nice handgun but unless she is an avid shooter the .45 may be a little much.

I was considering that as well. She has shot a .40 and a .357, and she seemed to like the .40 the best (a Kimber Custom II). If I could find a smaller .40 that would be ideal. Any suggestions for a good lady weapon? My wife is 5'10", and her hands are a bit smaller than mine. (not like the Sienfield episode)

edit: This one (http://www.kimberamerica.com/pistols/ultracarry/stainless_ultra_carry_II/156/) is nice, but, yet again, the price comes up.

Might have to set up a buffet of weapons for her to try out...

Is she going to put in the training time to become proficient with the safety?

Yes. That is one of the first things we talked about. We both grew up around weapons, and she got used to a lot of things while I was in the Marines. But yes, a resounding yes.

I spent quite some time as a Safety Officer, so that is foremost in my mind. I have no intention of getting my wife a weapon and letting her run wild.

I'm lucky that she is a reasonable person and that she actually said she wanted me to go over everything with her, and work her through the safe handling of it. I was going to anyway, but the fact that she asked made me happy.

Thank you for that question though! It is THE most important one, in all reality.

I think he was more referring to manipulating the thumb safety in the 1911 rather than "safe handling".

Oh. I assumed he meant "safe handling" when he said safety. That is another plus for Kimbers, since they have the ambidextrous safety.

My Kimber's safety isn't ambidextrous. ;)

It's just the muscle memory issue she needs to have instill through several hundred draws and holsters to manipulate that thing each and every time.

amhrinda

also, a good quote.

There are hundreds of millions of gun owners in this country, and not one of them will have an accident today. The only misuse of guns comes in environments where there are drugs, alcohol, bad parents, and undisciplined children. Period.

I see what you did there. Well played, Sir. You are correct, the safety, as an inanimate object, is not ambidextrous. It is, however, able to be worked by a left, or right handed shooter ;)

It's just the muscle memory issue she needs to have instill through several hundred draws and holsters to manipulate that thing each and every time.

And in light of this, I will not make her wear a suicide holster like we got stuck with.

A 1911 is a fine weapon as long as you put the time and effort into learning to properly use it. That said my wife chose her concealed carry weapon after shooting many and decided something different than I would have chosen for her. It shoot well, is well made and reliable and she can accurately shoot it.

I highly suggest letting her shoot a large assortment of pistols and revolvers and see what she feels comfortable with.

Thanks MountainMan,
I think that's what I am going to do. Worst that could happen is she will want them all.

I don't know any women who wants a mid size 1911. Most prefer small revolvers and hate operating slides.

I would let her pick her own gun for sure.

I understand that you are a big Kimber fan.

IMHO, the Springfield XD-M line might bear some consideration if hand size is any real issue. The grip is adjustable for hand size and the XD is a very fine weapon.

I'd at least include it in a "line-up" ;)

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. We are going to take a trip down to Cabellas and a few of the other places in our area so she can get a feel for a few different weapons. See what she likes the feel of first off.

Then I will take her out to the range and get her some trigger time so she can make an informed decision.

I am leaving the final choice up to her.

Creeker, thanks for mentioning the Springfield, I will definitely take a look at that one!

edit: Upon further review of the XD-M I think I would like to get a hold of one of them for myself too.

Heh.

She impressed me today when we were talking about rounds, and I mentioned that .45 has more of a kick than she might be looking for.

She told me if she spends enough time practicing, she will get used to it. "Plus, if I have to use it, I want to make sure they stay down."

I love my wife!

if she likes the .40 she should try a .45 imo. the .40 kicks more and while the .45 is larger, after training with it and learning how to manipulate it comfortably i think it's an easier gun to handle (i also have small hands). what would she be using it for? a .45 would be tedious for concealed carry but nice to have in the house. my concealed carry choice is a .38 revolver (airweight).

my .02 :)

Ever consider a Sig P239? It's a nice compact and a great gun.

amhrinda

to Bigbad: She wants something for the house, for when I am away. I think she is leaning towards a .45 right now, so we'll see how she feels after some trigger time.

to Deputy: I will definitely add that to the lineup.

Thanks all!

Have you thought of taking her to a range where you could rent some handguns to see what type she prefers? There are lots of very nice ones out there....all makes and varieties.

I just wish I could get my wife to be so interested in her own self defense. She told me last night....that even if I tried to train her in the efficient and safe operation of a handgun....she'd probably piss all over herself instead of using the firearm.......

Now, all I have to do is stay out of her range....but I don't think her aim is that good anyway.

That was very reassuring.......

My wifes favorite is my SIG 226 for the range, a Walter .380 ppks for carry and for night when I am not home its the mossberg 500 12ga pump. No better deterrence then the sound of a pump chambering a round.

Glock 27 .40 caliber. I do not know how many rounds she will be able to carry but the MAGAZINE will hold 9. It is a very fun gun to shoot and it is very compact. Take a look at it.

NEGATIVE.

Glocks do not have "clips." They feed from a magazine.

Well, maybe in the Air Force they're "clips."

Even though I am not a Glock person, I
would suggest you look at either the Glock 19
or a similar Springfield XD.
You can always upgrade when she becomes more proficient. (sp?)

I think buying a novice shooter a compact or sub compact weapon is a horrible idea. All that is going to do is give them a terrible case of the flinch.

Get her a full size auto or revolver. I suggest a Smith M10 .38 special with a 4 inch barrel. Easy to shoot well, and with the right ammo choice very effective.

Clips vs Mags

I read Mags whilst on the John.

I use clips to hold my papers together.

yup (http://www.galls.com/style.html?assort=general_catalog&style=RS189)

Though, in my line of work, the dual sided keyway is not a good thing. We like to keep that pointed away.

and you can get them in pink, though I have yet to see anyone with them.
Can go with the pink Taser,
or the pink OC gel device.

You know, pink is one of those real man colors.

Seriously though, I can't think of a reason to have
colored cuffs.

Though, we do have the rigid ones in SHU, and, after getting used to them,
they are pretty nice. The crooks hate them, so I like them.

I always suggest the person go to the range and feel the different guns and rent different ones to see which one is perfect for them. We are all different and our idea of the perfect firearm will not be the same as someone elses.

That said I absolutly love my Kimber 1911. Out of my entire collection it is without a doubt my favorite and when I take friends out that is always the one they ask to shoot.

Actually, she might be the target audience for the colored gear.

Or, it could be a suggestion from the producers.

I don't know if you already made your selection, but I would agree with the suggestion of a S & W revolver. Simple gun to learn with in the .38 Cal M & P or Model 10. I have two Kimbers; a SS Custom II TLE and a Pro Carry with a light rail. I love the Kimbers and they are my favorite hand guns, but would be too much for the spousal unit at this point. Good Luck.
