I have been cleared and now I have to decide where I want to work since the Miami field office has no openings and the wait is 100s of people long. I am thinking about Pheonix, AZ. Anyone know if I have time to make this decision? Does anyone know where I may have to best chance for Fugitive Ops..etc?
Also, after a few years as a IEA, what is the transition process to SA if I choose?
Any advice will help..thanks!

I wanted Newark, NJ but it wasn't available. Therefore, I changed to NY and was giving an EOD on the phone. Try calling DHC to see what's available. And decide from there...there is no point in deciding on a location that still may not be available.

I did and there are several..2 positions in Arizona. What was your time frame between the phone call and your EOD....I just want to make sure I have enough time to find a place across the country and get moved before my EOD.

IA-Investigations Agent
1. Phoenix AOD includes Phoenix, Mesa, Florence, Eloy, and Tucson at this point. Mesa is small and means flights. Florence and Eloy mean detention, flights, and ground tranport. Tucson means going to prisons and jails. Phoenix has all kinds of things. The chance of getting Fug Ops, especially fresh from the academy, is nil.
2. You likely won't have time to move before you EOD. You are likely to only get a 2 week notice. I got the call on a Friday afternoon and submitted my two weeks that day. The Monday after my two weeks ended I reported to the ICE office. Total elapsed time was 16 days. Best option would be to put your stuff in storage if single or dump it off on your significant other if you have one.
3. ICE does not have an IA (Internal Affairs) unit. We have OPR (Office of Professional Responsibility). I have no idea about the time frame of getting in. If you are referring, by chance to investigations, read Special Agent, the time frame would be years regardless of when you put in for it. You wait for an announcement and put in for it like you did for IEA.

Thanks Sierra!..The two position available are Eloy and Florence. You helped alot. I am guessing that shortly after your EOD you are sent to the academy....It there time after the academy to move? Are you in AZ? If so, any suggestions of areas to live?...not to live?

IA-Investigations Agent
You really need to do more research on ICE. No such animal entitled Investigations Agent exsists. Also there is no mechanismto transition to a Special Agent position, when you so choose. You'll have to apply, just like everyone else. OI & DRO, are essentially two different agencies, under the same umbrella organization.
A little research goes along way.

I just put in for the IEA job. What are the chances a guy like me getting the job since I do not speak spanish?
Will I have to learn the language in the academy like they do in the Border Patrol academy?
I have had it up to my eyes with flying all the time. My BUTT is killing me and I need something more to do do.

Not speaking Spanish is no problem. The 5 week course at FLETC is mandated if you dont, but it's not too bad. You will spend lots of time seated in the IEA position as well, just not at 3000 feet. Im assuming you put in for one of the status positions that are open. Which location are you most interested?

I am not sure what vacancy I put in for. I am not happy about a 5 week spanish class. I am not even sure I quilfy for this job. All I know how to do is sit on my butt all day, watch dvds for hours and hit on female passengers.

Hmmm...you sound like a shoo-in for Supervisory IEA. :D
To qualify for a status position you need to be able to show that you were able to do the job of a 7 or 8 (we don't have an 8). Can you write reports? Can you research a case? It isn't that hard, we have CBP and BP come over all the time for the job. ;)
No way around the Spanish course if you don't speak it. The first three weeks will kill you, the last two aren't bad. SW border has heaviest need that I am aware of.

I thought you guys were on the FAA pay band.
I don't see an issue with it other than overqualification. You would end up as a GL9 step whatever if they took you. Why didn't you try for a Deportation Officer (DO) slot? They are 9-12.

We are pand band. I am an I band and that is the same as a GS13.
H band is a GS12
G band is GS9
F band is GS7
E band is GS5

If you're coming from another agency within DHS, which you would be, pay matching will be done. You will lose your grade obviously, but your pay will be matched. The quals for the status candidate IEA positions are completion of either ICE-D, BP Acadmey, CITP or legacy II. The nationwide entry level IEA positions are of course different in that no prior experience is necessary.

I was 100% matched from FAMS to ICE SA, and I have a buddy that was matched from FAMS to ICE IEA. You will definately be matched. The bad thing is as of right now IEA's top out at GS-9, so no raises ever other than COLA. I hear though that they are fighting to get GS-11
I don't see any reason IEA shouldn't get 11's. I mean, CBP got journeyman 11's and we're just unglorified toll collectors!!! :)

IEA's definatley deserve 11's, There was some kinda ICE union email that went out the other on the govie dhs mail that talked about myth vs facts with the IEA GS11 thing.

So what did the email say? That should tell you right away what the status of IEA 11's.
Probably happen right after the USBP GS-12's :D:D

IEA's definatley deserve 11's,
Maybe some deserve it, just like some BPA's should be 13's as they do the same work as their 1811 counterparts. The reality is that while some hard chargers deserve the higher pay grade and can justify the higher pay grade with work product, the vast majority put out barely enough to justify what they get now. Which is unfortunate...

I just remember it said that the GS-11 IEA promotion was a total myth.
No real promotion to GS 11 coming or even paperwork introduced to get it.
The union got a Rep out of LA to intro a bill for the 11. Has not gone anywhere and they are saying it would be a couple years.

Hello all, May 2009 tester with a Salt Lake City Geo pref. Does anyone one know how the Salt Lake City office is to work for, good co-workers, assignments, etc?
I received a TO and returned all paperwork. I was wondering since I recently completed medical, fitness, and drug screen for the Border Patrol will any of those transfer over? I know it did in the past but was unsure since it has switched to the Dallas Service Center.
Thank you for any information

Sorry, I have no contacts at all in Utah, so I can't answer that.
All of your stuff should transfer over. I haven't heard that anything got changed other than the loss of CASS. Having them use the stuff should make you go quickly in the ICE process.

Thank you for the information Sierra, much appreciated.
I have tried to call the number they give you for status updates, but they never answer. I sent an email too, but to no avail.
Trying to get information on the Salt Lake City office has defnitely been difficult.

Is the ICE IEA position a covered position? By this I mean will it stop the clock for being hired by age 37? My goal is to be an 1811 someday.
Thanks for the help.

TXICE,
Thank you for the prompt response. One more question, I have been researching the IEA position on ICE's website and can't find very much. Are IEA under DRO or Investigations?
Thanks

Just took my IEA exam 10/8/09...recevied e-mail notification of passing yesterday (10/27/09). I know what the job annoucement listed as the overall steps, but from a practical experience perspective, can anyone shed some light on what I can expect for the next steps and time frams int he process? Also, the e-mail never mentioned what my score was...just a "Congrats" and then requesting a few items: formal resume, transcripts, DD-214, etc.
Any help is much appreciated.
Also, I applied for the Salt Lake region and currentl reside in Arizona. Thanks.
