Incident Details
Officer Henry Canales was shot and killed while conducting an undercover investigation into the sale of stolen televisions.
He and another officer were meeting with a group of suspects in a drug store parking lot. After the transaction, Canales walked around to the front of a Budget rental truck parked on the lot. The buyer followed him and then pulled out a pistol. There followed an exchange of gunfire. Canales was shot once. The suspect ran to the back of the truck and fell to the ground. The second undercover officer, R. Lopez, while attempting to take the suspect into custody was also fired on by the suspect, but was not hit. Lopez returned fire, killing the suspect who was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other suspects attempted to flee, but were caught by police a short time later.
Funeral services with full police honors will be held at Grace Community Church-South, 14505 Gulf Freeway, Houston, on Monday, June 29, 2009 at 9:30AM. Burial will follow at the Grandview Cemetery, 8501 Spencer Highway, Pasadena, Texas.
