I'm anxiously waiting for hiring to open up in some agencies other than USSS and the FBI. Does anyone have any info as to when ATF, DEA, FAMS, or ICE might start looking for 1811s again?
Thanks!
I do!

As Joeyd said, check usajobs.gov regularly. Look for job series 1811 for special agent/criminal investigator gigs, and 1801 for Air Marshals. Not every agency advertises on usajobs (like ATF), so it would be to your benefit to call the agencies you're interested directly and inquire about openings (current or future). Also, good intel is passed along on 911jobforums.com in their federal LE section.

Been there, done that, and I get the USAJobs search agent email every morning listing all the new 1801/1811 positions. (The information on this site is good, but not so good that I come here to get answers before I've checked directly with the hiring agencies and other official sources. I don't expect the guys and girls on this site to do my grunt work for me.)
USAJobs doesn't have any information about who is gearing up to hire - it only says who is currently hiring. I was looking for agency-insider information about when DEA, ICE, FAMS and ATF might open up recruitment again. ROS, you're with ICE from what I gather. Do you know whether ICE is still well-staffed in terms of criminal investigators, or is its reservoir of qualified candidates running low?
(I visit 911jobforums.com fairly regularly, and I was a subscriber once (for a very short time). I decided that it wasn't worth paying simply to be told to "use the search function", even though I had already used the search function and found nothing that was relevant or modern-enough to be useful.)
Thanks!

I'm an 1811, but I don't work for ICE (now, or previously). Might want to try Big Sexy, swat1, or charlydevo, as they're agents with ICE and might have some intel on their hiring.

Sorry - my bad. NCIS. I guess that'll teach me to brag about being thorough in my research...

Mac,
I read you all wrong. And this post above in quotes shows just what kind of guy you are: mature, eager, willing to learn, responsible, and able to take getting their chops busted a little without taking it personally. You will do fine in this field. That was one hell of mature post, and you made me chuckle about the whole "search" thing, especially when you are paying. I know the attitude there and pretty much barley visit there. Asa result, I slapped you with some green reputation (look upper right)
As a newbie, if your not opposed to moving, you have better chances at places nobody wants (aka- NY City, Los Angeles, SW border, etc...) Not sure your availability and experience (education or work), but keep at it. And welcome to RP.

Much appreciated, Joeyd6.
As far as unpopular career destinations are concerned, is it just a cost of living issue for places such as LA and NYC? And is DC considered one of these less popular areas?
Again, glad to be here, and glad to have access to information from experienced guys. Even more glad to have it without paying.

For most every agency I know of, Washington, D.C. is considered a major metropolitan area they need to fill bodies at. If you have a family, moving to one of these locations isn't just "cost of living issues," but if you're single, it may be an easier decision to make. I can't speak for all agencies, but for mine, there's some good work to be done in NYC, LA and DC, but many people who have families don't want to go there because of the cost of living and making things work for their family (again, if you're single, that may be a non-issue).

LoL! Maybe some of the other members here are "experienced", but I doubt my 1.5 years as a fed qualify me for that title. ;)
I don't believe ICE or ATF announces job openings on usajobs.

In regards to ICE Office of Investigations, BP348 is a 100% correct. No opening positions are posted on USAJOBS.

Im not over at ICE just yet, but I was told (by talking to an HR person) that they would be taking resume's for testing PIN numbers very soon. Most likely the first of June. Make sure you check ICE.gov for updates, (as Big stated) they do not post on USAJOBS. Also they are planning as of now to hire up to 1000 agents next year.
