Hey guys/gals,
Im applying to Hartford, and would absolutely love to work there. I have always wanted to be in a large city, where there is a lot going on, and a lot of opportunity for different divisions within the department.
Are there any HPD cops on here ? Just looking to hear first hand how it is..
Thanks !

Hey Brother. I used to dream of working for Hartford PD when I was younger. I even went on a few ride-a-longs. My criminal justice adviser was retired HPD.
A few years back they had this dumb-*** rule that you had to be a resident to even apply! That really made me, well, not very happy. I know they finally did do away with it after they got to the point of not being able to get a class together to go to their academy. They run their own right in downtown around the corner from the Civic Center.
By that time the damage was done. I was married with 2 kids and a good job but I also carried a resentment of sorts because when I would have been a great catch and good officer for them I could not even apply. Then I would see on the news about officers from there being arrested and under investigation for all sorts of stuff and they were always ones with like 2 or 3 years on the job. Not the veterans but the newly hired under the "resident only" rule.
But all in all I still think it would be a good department for a young guy like you. Hartford is a cool city and I am over there a lot for hockey games with my son. When I see the HPD officers I just shake my head and think of things that could have been.
I hear ya man, that would piss me the hell of too. I mean, they still 'prefer' Hartford residents but still accept out of towners. I have seen the Academy before, and actually like the idea of an academy where you're actually in the city of which youve been hired, and get to experience first hand ,the territory. Supposedly they are understaffed and desperate for candidates, so Im hoping for the best.

Hartford is understaffed because the pay is terrible.
