National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice is apparently not keen on going under oath for the Kean 9/11 commission.

Poised to convene its first hard-hitting hearings in January, the federal commission investigating the 9/11 attacks continues to be at odds with the White House over access to key information and witnesses. Two government sources tell TIME that National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice is arguing over ground rules for her appearance in part because she does not want to testify under oath or, according to one source, in public. While national security advisers are presidential staff and generally don’t have to appear before Congress, the commission argues that its jurisdiction is broader—and it's been requiring fact witnesses in its massive investigation to testify under oath. The exception: it may not seek to swear in President Bush, Vice President Cheney, Bill Clinton or Al Gore in the increasingly likely event they will be asked to speak to the commission. "I think that it is in their interest to meet with us," says GOP commission member John Lehman, saying that they should be invited, not subpoenaed, and be allowed to appear behind closed doors.

With such high-profile testimony in the offing, it’s no wonder the commission chairman, Republican Tom Kean, was telling reporters last week to expect major revelations from the investigative hearings expected to begin in late January.

He also suggested that the 9/11 attacks might have been prevented if mid-level government officials at various government agencies had done their jobs. As for senior officials like Rice or her predecessor, Clinton NSA Sandy Berger, and their bosses, Kean said the commission was still studying whether they share the blame. Rice could face tough questioning. One Republican commissioner says a comment by Rice last year—that no one “could have predicted that they would try to use a…hijacked airplane as a missile”—was "an unfortunate comment . . . that was, of course, a wrong-footed statement on its face," given that there was years of intelligence about Al Qaeda's interest in airplane attacks.

Whether she signs up willingly to testify now is still an open question. But the commission wants to hear from her. Said Democratic commissioner Tim Roemer: "The Presidents and Vice Presidents and national security advisers in both administrations should appear." Spokesmen for Rice and the commission had no comment on the talks but a senior Rice aide insisted that "Dr. Rice and the White House continue to work amiably with the commission, consistent with the President's desire to make staff available in accordance with his ability to fight the war on terrorism."

I think she should not testify. She has knowledge that may REQUIRE her to not answer questions for national security reasons. Puts her in a bad position of either lying under oath or giving information that is supposed to be secret. I tend to trust her far more than political hacks appointed by Congress.

This is just another thin attempt by the democrats to blame President Bush for 9/11. They want Condy Rice on the stand so they can try to force her to violate national security. If you really believe that President Bush knew 9/11 was going to happen then you sir are an idiot.

edited to add: VOTE REPUBLICAN

This is just another thin attempt by the democrats to blame President Bush for 9/11. Not so fast. If 9/11 is viewed as a crime ALL people/agendas/organizations that have realized de facto benefits must be held suspect and systematically removed from suspicion based on evidence, not political opinion...

If you really believe that President Bush knew 9/11 was going to happen then you sir are an idiot I can be an idiot from time to time but I don't believe Bush knew that 9/11 was going to ocurr... However it is likey that he and others in his administration, IMMEDIATELY understood what an immense "pretext stratagem" 9/11 represented should any larger agendas need one... If one looks closely there are several agendas that were in FACT advanced by 9/11. This alone PROVES nothing however... Only time will tell...

Thats correct, it proves nothing. Like I said this is just another excuse for the dims to try to lay the blame for 9/11 at the feet of the President. They are getting desperate and desperate people do desperate things.

desperate people do desperate things I completely agree. Do consider that the democrats had control of the White House for 8 years... And if Gore had won that would have been 12... and as I recall there was a bit of controversy as to who was elected. In fact Bush is the first president since 1888 NOT to have won the popular vote... (Benjamin Harrison over Grover Cleveland)

Which social/political/military agendas "suffered" during Clinton's time? Oddly each one is now burgeoning wildly in particular the military... Again a far cry from proof but this is still undeniably true, and yes all of this can also be explained more conventionally. I merely suggest that it is also POSSIBLE that there exist "desperate people doing desperate things" to steer events in patterns that benefit them. HISTORY suggest this is most often the case...

Have you taken a serious look at the information that is available surrounding 9/11 or for that matter the election of 2000?

Please notice I placed a question mark in this initial post here. I did that because I am questioning what it means that the National Security Adviser of America is uninterested in a public testimony. AS bhanson points out it could be for "national security reasons". Yes it could...

Yet Condoleeza Rice on May 16, 2002 stated: "I don't think anybody could have predicted that they would try to use an airplane as a missile, a hijacked airplane as a missile". Oddly enough Kristen Breitweiser, one of four New Jersey widows who lobbied Congress and the president to appoint the independent 9/11 commission had this to say: "How is it possible we have a national security advisor coming out and saying we had no idea they could use planes as weapons when we had FBI records from 1991 stating that this is a possibility".

To which I add why is it that at every WTO meeting held around the globe before 9/11(which Bush has attended) they would lock down airspace to PREVENT AIRPLANES from being used as MISSLES?

I'd like to ask you, someone that clearly obeserves this whole issue from another position: What EXACTLY did BIN Laden gain from 9/11?

Be well,

Ken
