They finally did approve for us. You have to register to take the dept's PT, get in an open spot 4 that, take and pass that test, then wait for the course, take and pass the course, then you are all BAD-A$$ and can purchase your SUPER PIMP M4 variant with infra-red lights, motion sensors, can opener and GPS attachments.

Seriously though, I've been through our AR-15 training/certification but I'm restricted to checking out AR-15's from our station armory - the same ones that you don't know where they've been or who fuc&ed with them last. Hell, I don't even know if they are sighted in or not or even if they're in operating condition. I don't think any self-respecting special teams guy would want to take a shot with a older beat up weapon that was just handed to him. If you know how deputies mistreat community gear, you would understand my frustration. All the weapons training staff are for individually owned, it's the brass who are against it. Probably some of the same brass who would like to get rid of boxing and grappling and anything with physical contact in our DT curriculum...

The KRISS Vector SMG, with suppressor and some kind of holosight. I'm sure you've seen it before. (doing some short research, that particular picture is actually of the 16inch carbine version, it seems to come with a solid wall barrel shroud that 'looks' like a suppressor.)

Best part about it is that there are now two civie non-SMG versions the SBO and SBR, the SBR being a short barreled rifle (5.5") version of the 16inch SBO carbine.

It uses Glock 31 mags. There are relatively inexpensive +17 capacity upgrades available for a total magazine of 30 rounds.

http://www.kriss-tdi.com/

They are currently developing a semi&auto shotgun 3" 12ga using the same system. Sooner or later and with enough capital they can start expanding the firing system to other calibers including rifles.

While I love the .357sig, I am not much on sub-guns. If I am carrying a rifle-sized weapon, why would I want a handgun round? :)

ngcsubutterbar
03-25-09, 07:07 PM
Because if you ever had a need for it you could fire it one handed better than most could fire a Thompson with two. When would that ever happen though right? It is an SMG with all the pro's and con's of such.

Again though, the most important thing to take away from that weapon is the firing system. As stated it can and is being adapted to other weapons and calibers. They only started with .45 acp to make the whole 'less recoil' thing very clear. They're working on a shotgun design, and they've already delivered a prototype .50 LMG to the Army for testing. All with the goal of being able to put more rounds on target.

ngcsubutterbar
03-25-09, 07:11 PM
My mistake on the Glock version, it's the G21 mags, my fault. It's .45acp not .357

Ok... easy mistake about the caliber... but just what are the pros of a subgun?

CityOfChicago
03-25-09, 10:08 PM
The benefit of a subgun is the interchange of ammo. But that's where we got it right ad FN got it right. Why put a handgun round in a carbine? Especially when a 9mm has more penetrating power (read: drywall) than a 5.56? FN created a whole new round thats works in both carbine (P90) and pistol (Five-seven). Whats better, you get 20 rounds in your pistol!

Like we were talking about the other day, Switch: The GSG9 popularized that MP5 and US law enforcement took it at face value.

Switchback
03-25-09, 10:56 PM
What FN does not advertise is that all the actual street shootings with the 5.7 have it performing like nothing more than a hot .22. They got the theory right, but it ends there.

Also, be careful with the 9mm comments. I believe it is a 9mm ball v. a 5.56 soft tip/hollow point. The same could not be said for a 5.56 ball. :) Also, it is not so much about the initial barrier, as the 5.56 will go through a vest like butter (as well as many other very solid barriers). The kicker with the light 5.56 is that it punches through the initial barrier, but unlike the heavier 9mm, begins to tumble immediately, making penetration through multiple barriers unlikely.
