Hi, I'm writing because I've always wanted a career in law enforcement that makes a difference in the world. Unfortunately, in high school I became involved in drugs due to peer pressure. I used marijuana and methamphetamine for a few years. I also experimented with other drugs. Now that I am not using any drugs and I know I will never go back, I am wondering if my stupid choices as a teen will affect my becoming a law enforcement officer. I am completely honest about my past use and don't want to hide anything if I apply for a position. I'm also considering going back to school and getting my degree in criminal justice. Can someone give me an honest answer about whether or not I can become a cop or sheriff? Also I was never arrested or even questioned by police about my use. I never sold drugs, I just had self esteem issues and wanted to numb my pain because I didn't know how to accept myself at the time. I think I could make a difference in people's lives and people I come in contact with can see that I can relate to them and I'm not just being a jerk by arresting them, I'm actually helping them.

The meth will be a deal-breaker, as will the unspecified drugs you "experimented" with. Auto-disqualify with every agency I know of. That term always baffled me... "experimented"? Did you do it for a Chemistry class or something?

As for your supposedly being able to relate to people you're arresting... forget it. There's nothing you can say that'll convince them you're helping them by taking them to jail. They will see you as a jerk no matter what.

You didn't always want to be in law enforcement too badly. I don't think it's a secret even among teenagers that drug use is illegal.

Agencies forgive a mistake here and there, not continued behavior like that. You could have found better peers in high school, sorry, look for something else as a career.

must agree with the other 2 posters; the meth is definitely a deal breaker...

Well I did grow up in the meth capitol of the world. I have no excuse for my past behavior but I did take responsibility for my actions. How is it that I know of at least one cop who regularly uses marijuana on the job, but that's ok?

If you know of a cop that uses Marijuana while employed as a police officer, you need to contact that department if you have credible evidence (i.e. I smoke weed with the officer.) However, I call BS.

So this wasn't a problem until you were told that your chances are SHOT ? !!

One has nothing to do with the other - that officer's illegal activity has no bearing on your hiring chances.

And you know as well as we that, if true, any cop that is regularly using an illegal drug is NOT doing so with the knowledge and approval of his/her agency.

I have to say something else:

As everyone knows, the economy is in the toilet right now. Good, hardworking people with 5, 10, 15 or more years on at one job are being laid off. Unemployment is at an all-time high, and the applicant pool has never before such a glut of candidates looking for work. People who are used to putting in an honest day's work are fighting for positions in the few fields that are still hiring.

And that means like never before, agencies can literally pick from the cream of the crop of applicants. It also means that candidates that might've been looked at previously aren't even getting a second glance now. There's just too many applications for very few positions, and LE can afford to be EXTREMELY selective.

Please think about that long and hard before posting questions asking whether or not you may or may not be qualified for a job in LE.

You came here and asked. You don't like our answers, to apply somewhere and let them tell you.

You're right, we don't know what we're talking about. Just like every other dopehead who comes here wanting to be a cop, you KNOW someone on the job that uses. That clearly means you can too. Go ahead and apply, and be sure to tell them when you do that you know a cop who uses, that will guarantee you a job with any department.

They're called observation skills and investigation. If you can't grasp those on an internet discussion forum, it my be time to think about BARBER COLLEGE,

Not going to happen, ever, under any circumstances. Find another career.

... I've always wanted a career in law enforcement??? ......Unfortunately, in high school I became involved in drugs ....I used marijuana and methamphetamine for a few years... I also experimented with other drugs (heroin, cocain, Viagra????).

I think you answered you question by yourself, there is no place and no need for a drug user in the thin blue line. But maybe Murphy's Mall Security will give you an uniform.
