Imagine this...

You are a recent graduate college student in MI...you have $30,000 in debt from your CJ degree.

You can:

A: Dish out $6,000 more, go to an academy, unpaid, not work for 5 months, probably not find a job afterwards (atleast not where you want), and make about $35k.

B: Go to some Texan PD, they will give you a $10,000 signing bonus, an apartment, a drive home car, will pay you $30,000 to go through the academy and start of making $45,000.

Hanging in there is foolish if you ask me.

Michigan is dealing with it because you have a bunch of idiots running the state. I don't see it getting any better, in fact it will get much worse before it gets better I believe. The federal morons on top of the state idiots are really gonna hurt some of you northern states.

I agree it is very tough right now in MI. I bought a house thinking it was a great Idea. I love the house, but it has locked me into an area that has little job movement. I love the area there are just no full-time jobs opening up. When they do there are 200 guys beating down the door to get in.

I am now working overseas to make some money and might have to sell and relocate.

Relocate is all good IF you have the means to do so. I'd love to BUT it's not that easy! :D :D

What is it about the Great Lakes states that sees them getting slammed in this economy?

We are the home of the dying auto industry . When I was growing up everyone one I knew just figured we would work at the GM plant if our great career goals went down the tubes. Last summer I worked a security gig tearing down the GM plants.

Its hard for out of towners to understand but its not just GM etc that it effects the ripple effect of plant closures effects the whole area, police, fire jobs, stores, BARS  etc.

The unions didnt help by just taking and taking with out thinking of the long term effects. I still support good strong unions. I just wish they would think about the generations in the future and be happy with there HIGH pay.

I love it so much because it's all I know. I was born and raised here, my family and friends are here. Plus I love how we get a little bit of everything weather wise.:D I would relocate not because I want to BUT because I would have to. There's no jobs here, and I have to go where they are ya know.:) For someone to pack up their life and relocate is alot harder than one pertrays. That's just my .2 cents though. :p

I would hate to leave but it is what it is. I am looking at PHX AZ. They have a good lateral program and I have a good buddy out there that came from MI.

We've got lots of people lateraling in from other states. I think Gilbert has a couple lateral spots open right now.

Don't have the details, but as of today, Michigan is 100 troopers less, due to layoffs.
