Hi,

I have a few questions reguarding NYPD pay, i hope you guys can help me out.

I checked NYPD recruit site and the pay is good, but the living standards in NYC makes the pay seem like peanuts. Yet, with the overtime of being a cop, say it pays 1.5 times, that can add up pretty well (lets do some math, PO makes about 79k for top pay, so if that PO does about 20 hours per week for OT, he can make half of his salary on top of his top pay.. Unless there is OT cap). Yet my questions relies on if PO's in NYPD can do side jobs, that are off-duty? Here in Fairfield County, cops makes over 60-70 per hour for off duty police work. Does NYPD have something similar? The highest paid state workers are police officers in the Fairfield county (250k.... with over 70-80 hours per week).

So my question is basically, does NYPD have off-duty police work? If so, how much does it pay?

Thank you,

J

And there is an OT cap. Most boroughs are around 30-35 hours a month. Additionally, as a rook, you don't sign-up for OT till the senior guys have. That OT will bump up their pension and traditionally that is not screwed with by rookies. But there seems to be a new generation of rooks who don't want to play by those rules.

Yes. But they are not in your NYPD uniform and must be approved in advance, in writing, by the department.

There is a program called "Paid Detail" where private companies can rent a off-duty cop in uniform. The problem is you are in unifomr and off-duty and they don't pay you directly. They send the check to the city, who then sends it to you. The company also pays the city a fee of 10% your total amount earned. Not sure the exact amount it is up to now, but I thing around $40 an hour is in the ballpark.

And that money is you working as a contract employee. Thus, no taxes are taken out, so at the end of the year, you owe city, state and federal tax, plus social security and a self-employment tax whihc you have to pay. Plus getting paid has been an issue. Most checks take 4 weeks to 8 months to get. I alctually had to sue JayZ's record company to get paid fro a gig after a year of waiting for my stinking $600. Plus, the job limits how many hours amontsh you can do this gig.

Thats great!

I wish it was greateer than 40 dollars though.

How about police officers who are directing traffic or doing construction sites? Are those considered off duty as well? In the Fairfield County it is, which is great for these officers here.

Thanks,
J

None of that here in NY City. The NYPD has civilian traffic agenst who direct traffic and write parking tickets for a living. No cops at construction...all private company.

Highway posts cops on overtime at some construction sites. I am fairly sure the company pays the city back for it.

Nope!

The road work done on the NYC Highways/Roads is done by the City DOT. City DOT has their own budget and sometimes subcontracts that work out to contractors. If teh DOT thinsk a location needs police presence, they tell the NYPD who assigns a cop on the clock as an overtime post.

But even doing so, it is a "city" job so no permits are given and the DOT does not pay the NYPD, becuase city agencies don't pay each other.
