Knife man shot dead by police
By Andrew Fraser
December 27, 2003

A MAN was gunned down by police in suburban Brisbane yesterday after stabbing four people and terrorising neighbours.

Witnesses said the man, aged about 40, started arguing with neighbours in West End, in Brisbane's inner south, at 4.45am before stabbing a 16-year-old boy who lived in one of the apartments an hour later.

An older man nearby tried to intervene, but was also stabbed. A third person, an elderly lady, came out to see what had happened and was also stabbed.

Her daughter alerted police, who found the man in a nearby street about 10 minutes later, wrestling with a council worker who had a knife wound in his back.

Police used capsicum spray but it failed to stop the man, and when he started walking towards police brandishing the knife two officers opened fire.

Karl Bretton, 29, said he was woken when the stabbed woman's daughter banged on their door. "It's obviously not the best way to wake up in the morning," he said.

His partner, Annette Goulden, rushed next door to comfort the elderly woman before ambulance officers arrived.

All four injured people were in a stable condition late yesterday afternoon.

Both the police and the Crime and Misconduct Commission will investigate the incident, and Queensland Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson said it was important not to pre-judge the circumstances.

"However, it would appear from the information available that the officers' actions were justified and they appear to have acted professionally and responsibly," he said.

A completely justified and justifiable use of deadly force.

This sentence alone starts off things as if the police were at fault. Guess media is liberal everywhere.

What the hell would you want it to say? A man was "justifiably penetrated and fatally wounded by fast moving lead objects"?

He was brought down by gunfire. Hence, "gunned down". There's no implication anywhere in that article that what happened was wrong. Stop looking for the bogeyman; he doesn't exist   .

To me as well, the words "gunned down" does have at first glance the connotation of some sort of murderous reference.

If you are not a police officer than perhaps you read/interpreted it differently.

What they could have said was, " Officers had to use deadly force to shoot a dangerous man who had a knife and had stabbed people"
