Hello, I hope you can help with the following:

Say there are two NYPD detectives who are in the Crime Scene unit who are having a child and get married. Are they still allowed to work together or does one of them have to transfer to a different department/precinct? I was told there's an official law that prohibits married couples from working together in the same department. Also, if their boss/sargeant hides their marriage from the rest of the department and even the IAB, what are the consequences for said person?

Any help and info is appreciated. Thanks for your time!

Would never happen...unit is too small.

who are having a child and get married.
What comes first?

Married or kid in common = different precinct in the NYPD.

I was told there's an official law that prohibits married couples from working together in the same department.
No law. Department policy.

Also, if their boss/sargeant hides their marriage from the rest of the department and even the IAB, what are the consequences for said person?
IAB would not get involved. Boss not involved at all. The cop is supopsed to notify chain of command and they will be moved. Nobody hides anything in the NYPD.

Thank you very, very much for your answer! It is highly appreciated. :) I should have mentioned it's not a real situation, only a hypothetical one. I wanted to know how the NYPD deals with such a situation and what a real life cop would think of it.

Would never happen...unit is too small.

Did you mean the unit is too small for there to be two NYPD detectives or did you mean it's too small for any two members to marry?

What comes first?

This particular hypothetical situation, the baby first, then marriage.

Married or kid in common = different precinct in the NYPD.

No law. Department policy.

Thank you for confirming this. So even if they don't get married and still have a child, one of them has to be transferred to a different precinct.

IAB would not get involved. Boss not involved at all. The cop is supopsed to notify chain of command and they will be moved. Nobody hides anything in the NYPD.

Thank you also for confirming this. It's great to see the NYPD in real life is much better than how TV portrays it.

1. Why would you want to marry someone you work with???

2. Why would you want to work with someone you are married to??

3. Why would a pregnancy occur prior to marriage?? Are they so dumb that they haven't figured out how that works??

4. Why, just why??:o
