Hi everybody, I found this forum yesterday and so far it seems to be very informative.

Since it's my first post, a little about me and why I'm here...

Since high school, I've always had a yearning for wanting to serve my country. I'm first generation American in my family, and no one has ever served in the U.S. services. The closest is my father and a 2nd cousin who work for NJ DOC in Rahway, and another 2nd cousin who is Coast Gaurd. To make a long story short, I want to be a Jersey Trooper. A part of me has always wanted to be in LE, I feel it will also fill that sense of needing to serve my country (or in this case community), and to be honest - I'm sick of hearing the bad rap cops get. Because of a few bad apples, much of the public see the whole bunch as being bad. As gay as it sounds, I want to help change that.

With that said, NJSP is not accepting applications at this time. This is according to the website, and an officer I spoke to when I called. When asked if he had any idea when they would again accept applications, he replied he had no idea. I am asking you, is there anybody on here that knows when? Perhaps the officer that answered the phone is not allowed to say but someone would anonymously on here.

Since we're on the topic, how long is the applications process? Doesn't quite say on the website like it does on the PASP site (10-12months). I'm assuming it's about the same.

I have many more questions, but figure first things first. Yes, I did search this site for some answers a few hours yesterday. Hence, only posting my first post today and not yesterday. Thanks for your time! :D

There is an indefinite freeze. And not to burt your bubble, but they average around 500 applicants for every ONE position they are hiring. Being qualified is just not enough. NJSP is one of the most political places to get hired. So is most of NJ.

Try Delaware State Police.....always hiring!

I'd rather be brutally informed than blissfully misled.

PA State Police is beginning to look better and better. I live in eastern PA. One of the bigger reasons for wanting NJ over PA is location. I'd rather not be relocated in a state that is more than 5 hours wide. I'm not a big fan of western PA. As far as DE is concerned, if i'm gonna move south, I might as well do it right. I'm going to a warm state if I go south!

Anyway, thanks for the heads up. What brought about the freeze? Full employment? economy? Got a link to an article maybe?

Thanks again for the insight. Anybody else have any input?

edit: Time isn't a huge factor either. I'm still young and I've got some good things going for me as far a career is concerned. It's just not in law enforcement, and I can't picture myself doing what I'm currently doing my whole life.

I had an old roomate with nothing but a 4 year degree, no steady work history get hired, graduate and just completed his FTO with the NJSP. I had another co-worker with 4 years LE experience, a degree and great work history get denied his first time around(has since been offered, but probably passing up). NJSP is a great organization BUT they are plenty more places to try in nj. Did you take the most recent civil service test? Look into getting experience as a Class I or II? If state police is really what you want then go for it, but like it was said above try NY, MD, PA, or DE too.

If you happened to get hired on with PA State Police, your chances of getting placed in eastern PA is MUCH higher compared to the Pittsburgh area.

I live in Jersey and also went through the same thing you are. My buddies old man has been a trooper for over 20 years and even he said he has no idea what will happen with the application process. All he said was to keep checking the website and he would contact me if/when he heard anything. So I had to make moves and am currently in the hiring process at a municipal department in NJ. But also, from what I have heard, the NJSP is one of the most competive departments to get yourself into.

good luck my man

theyre still running classes, and rumor has it that another will start in january of '09. the problem is that theyre simply picking suitable recruits from a massive pool that theyve already compiled from 2 years ago. only once theyve exhausted all suitable applicants from that pool will they re-open the application process.
