Hi, I am new to the board and have a few questions. I am very interested in joining the NYPD as soon as I finish my degree. I live in NJ and have no problem relocating to the city if I get the job. Hopefully you can help me on a few questions that I have and couldn't find using the search function.

First off, what shifts do the officers work? I read somewhere that they work five 8.5 hour shifts a week. I would much rather work a twelve and was wondering if there was any way to do this.

How long does it normally take to get into a specialized unit or become a detective? I know that this varies with every person but an average time would be great.

For any current NYPD officers, how do you like it? My father was an officer in Jersey so I know about the career but what specifically do you like/dislike about working in the city?

Thanks in advance!

Well, if you think they are going to offer you the job as a NJ resident, you are confused. Youwon't get a job offer unless you live in NY. You can't be found qualified unless you have provem residency.

I went out there last year and took the exam. I think my score was 95-97% or something around there. I get letters every few weeks inviting me out to finish the rest of the process. The problem is I dont have the Funding to go out there myself. I live in Michigan. The last time i went it cost around 450$. Plus not knowing anyone in NY except my roomy that was going to move with me, wouldn't be good. No backup if I cant find an ok place to live.

Thanks for the help..... also, what are your feelings on hiring in the coming years? I know they canceled the January class and am curious how this will affect me when I apply in about a year.
