I have a question, and who better than LEO's to answer it. I am curious as to what you all think is the best .40 cal home defense round. I want to neutralize a threat immediately, but I also don't want too much penetration so I have to worry about neighbors, etc.

I have shot many rounds of Federal Hydra Shok, as well as Speer Gold Dot (currently using), but is there something that might be a little better? This needs to be an "all purpose" round as I also carry concealed if possible. Thanks for any and all suggestion

Any quality hollow-point will be fine, really. Some are all about the pre-fragmented/frangible, but they often don't penetrate to the vital organs.

I prefer Winchester Ranger SXT, Speer Gold Dots, and Federal Hyydrashocks... in that order.

Thanks. I will have to check out the Winchester's. I haven't used them before.

I like Winchester Ranger because it is inexpensive enough I can afford to practice with it (alongside Winchester USA (White Box), of course).

180gr Gold Dot. It's our issue ammo and works very well.

However, if you want to "neutralize a threat immediately", You aren't going to do that with any pistol. I suggest a 12 gauge with #1 buck for a house gun.

#4 steel shot would be perfect if you think the biggest threat is a home invasion by angry waterfowl.:D

Very true. I had my 12 gauge stolen about a year ago, and haven't replaced it yet, so I am down to my pistol right now.

I figure 15 holes, pause, 15 more holes will stop most threats:D

Let me let you in on a little secret. It don't matter. Carry a decent round from a reputable maker that you shoot well, cause let me assure you, if you cannot get lead on target, your'e dead.

Anyone here who tells you that unless you carry XYZ's latest rompin , stompin, wonder round is full of ****.

For home defense, I have a coach size double barrel 12 guage with 00 buck within reach my reach when I'm in bed. That shoots nine 32 cal slugs at anyone down range of each barrel. Aiming isn't necessarily a problem. I've seen people empty a magazine and never hit the what they're shooting at.

If someone wakes me up in the middle of the night, my assumption is I probably won't be clear headed enough to be that good a shot with a pistol for a few seconds at least. The shotgun takes care of that problem.
