So last time I was riding along the officer was called to a loud party complaint. The person who answered the door let us in. We stepped in and saw 3 people in the house. The officer heard someone trying to get out of the basement so he went down after them and told me to make sure no one leaves. After he goes downstairs the person who opened the door told me he needed to go and I told him he needed to stay until the officer came back. The officer came back shortly luckily.

I am wondering what I should have done if the guy decided he was going to leave despite what I had to stay. I don't have any police powers so he doesn't have to listen to me and I'm not sure if I should use force to try to make him stay or not. If I hurt him or ended up getting hurt it could mean the end of my Explorer tour or possibly even the end of my Post. What would you do if you were given the same situation as above, but the person was going to get up and go out the door? By-the-way you have no radio and do not know the officer's phone number.

Take out one of those foot long flashlights and remind the guy it works just as good as a night stick. :D.................

You should have said and done nothing except possibly to alert the officer that the guy was now trying to leave. You have zero authority to do anything more. By taking any other action , you could have endangered yourself and opened up the officer and his dept to civil liability. ( lawsuit)

I think your best bet would be to ask the officer you were riding with what you should have done....

He would be the best person to ask...

Thanks for actually giving me a real answer.

Haha, I lol'ed at that.

Basically, MCSAP hit it on the head. There isn't much you can do. If it was me, and the guy tried to run out, I'd probably just give a loud shout of something along the lines of "don't move" or something that the officer could hear from the basement. Then, hopefully, he could possibly know something isn't going right and just call for backup. But like Hockey said, just ask the officer next time you see him.

Hey that's not a bad idea, the yelling thing. See that's what I was looking for. Thanks.
