GASTONIA, N.C.-- Two teenagers are in jail on first-degree murder charges for allegedly shooting and killing an off duty detective from Mississippi in Gastonia on Sunday.
Police say Rakeam Fleming and Tommy Barnette Jr. allegedly tried to rob Frederick Gaston of Mississippi and then shot him in the parking lot of the Microtel on Broadcast Street in Gastonia just before midnight Sunday. Gaston was later pronounced dead at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
A 911 call by someone who was at the hotel when Gaston was shot was released Monday afternoon. Click here to listen to the call (.wav file).

Frederick Gaston most recently worked as a Detective with the Jackson County, Mississippi, Sheriff's Office. Before that he served as the interim police chief with the Moss Point Police Department in Mississippi.
Police say Gaston was on his way for his final two weeks of reserve duty in Virginia. He was an active reserve member of the United States Air Force.
Fleming has been charged with first-degree murder. Barnette also faces the same charge along with possession of a firearm by a felon. Both Fleming and Barnette are expected to appear in court on Monday.
The hotel mentioned is located in the upper part of my district (but not my area) - my shift was actually off when it all occurred. According to all information passed down, he was about two weeks from retiring as a LTCOL in the Air Force Reserve and as stated had been an Interim Chief at his Mississippi Department.
The two dirtbags who shot him, Rakeam Fleming, Tommy Barnette Jr., have apparently been bragging about their deed in jail; if what I have been made aware of is true, in NC they can not give the Death Penalty to them due to a NC Supreme Court decision preventing that form of justice for someone under 18. :mad:
Please say a prayer for the Deputy Gaston's family, both in blood and in blue.
